How do I become an International Student at AWC?

One of the benefits of starting at AWC is that we do not require a TOEFL or IELTS or SAT score.  Instead, each student takes our placement test to determine their English and Math proficiency level.  We offer five levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) and developmental courses to help students achieve college-level English which is required for higher courses and university transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

In accordance with the US Immigration law, students from neighboring Mexican communities attending classes at Arizona Western College are also subject to international student admission requirements. A Student Visa is required documentation for students who wish to cross the border on a regular basis for the purpose of attending classes at AWC. Commuter students may study full-time or part-time.
Tuition waivers are available to students from Sonora through an agreement between Arizona-Mexico Commission and the Commission Sonora-Arizona. Qualifying students from Sonora who are studying in Arizona may pay in-state tuition for a maximum of two years. Students from Arizona who wish to study in Sonora have a series of educational and living options available. For more information, contact the International Office.
An I-20 is a Certificate of Eligibility issued by a school, which states an international student has met the admissions requirements, financial criteria and has been accepted for a full course of study. It does not guarantee a student will receive a visa or gain entrance to the United States. An I-20 is not valid unless it is processed by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
All new International students will have to live on campus their first academic year. Residential Life oversees three residence halls on the AWC campus. Suite-style accommodations, which include a bathroom, shower, phone line and internet access, are available to accommodate both AWC and NAU-Yuma students.
You will register for classes after you have taken the placement test. This test will determine your English and Math eligibility. The International Student Program will advise you in selecting your classes.
If you have not already wired your funds to Arizona Western College before your arrival, you must pay your tuition when you register for classes. Insurance and dormitories fees (if you want to live on campus) will also be due upon your arrival.
No, financial assistance is not available for first year students. Returning students may be eligible to apply for some scholarships after completion of their first year.
No. F-1 students are non-immigrant students. Non-immigrant students are temporarily present in the U.S. and are not eligible for in-state tuition.
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services allows international students to work on campus for up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session.
