EMS - EMT / Paramedic


Program Description


The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course and Paramedic Program are offered for both professionals and community members. The program offers courses sanctioned by various agencies such as the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), the American Heart Association (AHA).

Graduates of EMS-152, the basic EMT course, will be able to function as EMT in the field working in a clinical environment or ambulance, using Basic Life Support (BLS) skills.

  • Provide BLS airway management and control
  • Provide BLS bleeding and shock control
  • Treat and asses medical and trauma situations in the pre-hospital setting at the BLS level.   

Graduates of the Paramedic Academy will be able to function as Paramedic in the field working in a clinical environment or ambulance using BLS and Advance Life Support (ALS) skills.

  • Provide ALS airway management and control
  • Provide ALS bleeding and shock control
  • Provide peripheral and central venipunctures.
  • Interpreting and analyze 12 lead electrocardiography and cardiac monitoring. 
  • Treat and asses medical and trauma situations in the pre-hospital setting at the ALS level.

EMS 152 (Basic Emergency Medical Technician) is a prerequisite for the Paramedic programs.

  1. Students must submit an EMT application and be accepted into the EMS-152 course by the Director of EMS and the Medical Director of EMS.
  2. Meet the requirements of the Arizona State Department of Human Services.
    1. T.B. clearance card within 90 days prior to attending class.  
    2. 255 or higher reading score.
    3. Must have a current AHA BLS provider card (Search for "CPR"). 
    4. Must 18 years of age prior to the completion of the program.
    5. The person shall be a United States citizen or a legal resident.
    6. The person shall be a high school graduate or have successfully completed a General Education Development (G.E.D.) examination. 
    7. The student shall not have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony, or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Arizona. 
    8. The student shall not have been dishonorably discharged from the United States Armed Forces. 
    9. The student shall not have been previously denied certified status, revoked or have his/her current certified status under suspension pursuant to ADHS/BEMS R-9-25-402.

Paramedic Application Process

  1. Thoroughly have read the Arizona Western College Paramedic Student Guide Book
  2. Review and understand YRMC On-Boarding guidelines to be eligible for clinical requirements before being allowed on their (YRMC) campus for clinical training. This will be completed during the first semester. 
    *As of now, all Paramedic students are required by YRMC to have their COVID vaccinations and boosters. 
  3. You must have completed ENG 101 to be eligible for this program, or have 255+ on the reading placement test. This test is offered at the Campus Testing Center in the 3C Building, Monday through Thursday from 0700 to 1700.  Please allow 2 hours for this test.
  4. Read, complete and submit the Hold Harmless Form
  5. Read, complete and submit the Memo of Understanding Form
  6. Complete and submit Fingerprint Clearance Card Level 1.
  7. Submit a completed AWC Paramedic Application with the following to the AWC PSI Building or email them to  Lupe.Fuentes@azwestern.edu by 03/31/2022:
    • Proof of citizenship (birth certificate, etc.) and a copy of a picture ID.
    • ENG 101 transcripts or equivalent placement test. 
    • A copy of your High School Diploma or GED, 
    • Submit copy of current AZ or NREMT Basic EMT Certification.
    • Copy of your CPR Card
    • Fingerprint Clearance Card Level 1 (visit AZDPS website) code: ARS 15-1881
    • Memo of Understanding Form 
    • Assumption of Risks and Hold Harmless Form.
  8. ADA requirements must be submitted in writing to the Program Director via the appropriate AWC office for the accommodation of a disability.  This must be done prior to acceptance into the academy.  The physical, mental and emotional standards for completion prohibit most ADA accommodations.
  9. The applicant is responsible for all costs that may be involved in the application process and YRMC on-boarding.

Paramedic
