Our Strategic Vision for Southwest Arizona

How AWC is driving regional transformation through coordinated AI integration.

Why It Matters Locally

AI is becoming a foundational workforce skill impacting agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, and small business operations across Southwest Arizona.

AI for All

This isn't just about creating tech specialists. We ensure every student, employee, and business owner can leverage AI to boost productivity and economic opportunity.

A Unified Strategy

Rather than isolated experiments, AWC connects academic pathways, employee upskilling, community workshops, and ethical governance into one institution-wide plan.

Regional Impact

Preparing students for high-demand careers, supplying employers with tech-ready talent, and keeping local small businesses competitive in a digital economy.

AI, Done Responsibly

As AWC integrates AI across teaching and operations, we’re committed to doing it ethically. Our guiding principles shape how AI is used across the college, so students, employees, and the community can trust that innovation moves forward with care.

Arizona Western College (AWC) recognizes Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a powerful, enduring technology that will shape learning, operations, and innovation for years to come.

AI tools—such as ChatGPT, Gemini, CoPilot, and others—analyze information, generate content, and support decision-making. AWC’s goal is to use AI responsibly to advance our mission of Transforming Lives through Education and Partnerships while upholding the College’s Strategic Objectives of Access, Disruption, and Excelencia.

These principles guide the responsible use of AI across all areas of the College—academic, operational, and community.

Our Guiding Principles

1

Safe and Secure

We protect institutional and personal data.

All use of AI at AWC must safeguard privacy, prevent misuse, and comply with federal and state laws such as FERPA and HIPAA. We use only trusted, approved tools that protect sensitive information.

2

Human-Centered

We believe AI should enhance—not replace—human intelligence.

AI is used to strengthen learning, creativity, and professional judgment. Final decisions in academics and operations always remain the responsibility of people.

3

Ethical and Legal

We act with integrity.

AI use at AWC must follow laws, institutional policies and procedures, and our professional ethics. We respect intellectual property, academic honesty, and the creative ownership of our students, faculty, and staff.

4

Inclusive & Accessible

We ensure access to AI tools and learning opportunities.

AI must serve everyone—students, employees, and community members—by supporting inclusion, innovation, and opportunity. Training and open communication help close digital and knowledge gaps.

5

Transparent & Accountable

We communicate clearly when AI is used.

Students, faculty, staff, and departments should be open about how AI supports their work, learning, and operations. Outputs from AI tools must be reviewed for accuracy, bias, and compliance before use.

6

Evolving & Responsible

We keep pace with change.

AI technologies evolve rapidly; our policies and practices will be reviewed regularly to reflect new laws, tools, and institutional needs. Feedback from students, employees, and partners will guide updates.

Oversight and Leadership

Under the leadership of AWC’s Dean of Innovation, all AI activities will align with these principles through three commitments:

Alignment Reflect AWC’s mission, vision, and core values.
Human Oversight Maintain accountability and sound judgment.
Compliance Follow all policies protecting privacy and data.

Living Document

These principles will evolve as AI and technology evolve. Regular reviews will ensure that AWC’s use of AI continues to enhance learning, uphold integrity, and foster innovation for all.
