The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (Perkins V) provides annual federal grant funding to states for eligible postsecondary institutions with career and technical education programs such as Arizona Western College’s Career and Technical Education Programs. The purpose of the Perkins Act is to strengthen and improve the quality of vocational education (occupational program) and to expand the vocational education opportunities in the Nation.

Eligible recipients which receives Perkins funds are required to use the funds in the following areas; develop, coordinate, implement or improve career and technical education programs, to further expand career and technical skills of students enrolled in career and technical education programs, and to meet the needs identified in the comprehensive needs assessment and are required to use for the following:

  • Strengthen the academic, occupational and technical skills of students
  • Provide students with strong experience in and understanding of all aspects of an industry, including partnerships/collaboration with local industry representatives 
  • Develop, improve or expand the use of technology in career and technical education
  • Provide professional development programs to instructors, counselors and administrators
  • Develop and implement evaluations of career & technical education programs
  • Initiate, improve, expand and modernize quality career & technical education programs 
  • Provide services and activities that are of sufficient size, scope and quality to be effective
  • Link secondary and postsecondary career and technical education including Tech Prep initiatives and articulation agreements to include credits.

Funding

To receive Perkins grant funding, Arizona Western College submits an annual grant application to the Arizona Department of Education and submit regular fiscal and program reports to ensure compliance with federal and state laws. In addition, AWC submits an annual narrative report.

Focus and Implementation

AWC CTE focuses on providing students with up to date, innovative programs of study, industry relevant equipment and integrates academic learning with real-world experience to prepare students for the workforce. Real-world experience is obtained through the numerous skills labs in programs such as, Agriculture, Automotive, Nursing, Public Safety, and Welding to name a few.

Nontraditional Careers

The term "Nontraditional Careers" refers to jobs that have been traditionally filled by one gender. The US Department of Labor defines Nontraditional Occupations as occupations for which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25% of the individuals employed in that occupation or field of work.

The purpose of identifying non-traditional options is to foster interest in and access to these careers with the goal of opening up these professions to the under-represented gender.

Nontraditional employment offers many benefits for both women and men. The most important benefit of choosing a nontraditional career is job satisfaction. Research shows that individuals who choose career paths based on their abilities and interests experience greater job satisfaction. It is important to choose careers that are rewarding and interesting.

Single Parents/Homemakers Services

Perkins funds are given annually for Advisement Services to offer Career and Technical Education students assistance to student who qualify for support services while attending college.  The services provide limited funds for transportation as well as assistance with referrals and other needs to enhance the students’ ability to achieve academic and personal success.
