CERT - Occupational Certificate


Prepares students for a journeyman level entrance into the electrical construction trades industry. This program provides opportunities for students to learn to install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures in accordance with relevant codes. Program curriculum is aligned with National Center for Construction Education Research standardized national skills standards for the construction trades.  

Program Purpose


Four-year apprenticeship program built to provide hands-on experience on a job while learning about the trade in school. The program prepares you to become a Journeyman Electrician.

The recommended plan below meets the requirements to complete this program.  For official requirements, visit the AWC Catalog. If the recommended classes listed below don’t fit your schedule or interests, you can take alternate classes. 

The Electrical Apprenticeship Program is a mixture of academic classes with hands-on learning and simultaneous paid, practical, on-the-job training with a local company. 

Graduates of the program will learn a wide range of electrical skills and gain industry-specific experience. They will also become an Arizona State Certified Journeyman Electrician, which is transferable anywhere in the United States.

Additional Information


The Electrical Apprenticeship Program combines academic coursework with hands-on training and paid on-the-job experience at a local electrical contractor. Graduates will develop a comprehensive skill set, gain industry-specific experience, and earn an Arizona State Certified Journeyman Electrician credential, which is valid throughout the United States.

To apply, please follow these steps:

  1. Seek employment with a licensed electrical contractor. We recommend securing employment before beginning coursework; however, you may enroll in classes at AWC if you cannot obtain a position immediately.
  2. Enroll at Arizona Western College. Complete the admissions process and register for the required electrical courses.
  3. Meet with an academic advisor or faculty advisor. Review your personalized academic plan and confirm that you are enrolled in the appropriate classes.
  4. Submit the Electrical Apprenticeship Application and attach your current résumé.
