This certificate is designed to provide students with an understanding of irrigation management techniques that combine conservation principles with efficiency, balancing the water needs of the soil, crop, and environment, and economic input.

Program Purpose


With the current drought conditions and the continued increase in precision agriculture related to irrigation, the need for people with a basic understanding of irrigation management is increasing.

Learning Outcomes


  • Students will prove knowledge of basic information on the study of germination, emergence, growth, and reproduction of important economic species; and how these plant processes are influenced by the environment, such as soil-water-plant relations.
  • Students will identify and demonstrate principles of soil science, the origin, nature, and classification of soils, the chemical, physical, and biological properties in relation to growth and nutrition, and the problems of saline soils.
  • Students will develop a basic understanding of chemical applications utilizing integrated pest management in the decision process.
  • Students will develop a basic understanding of the history of irrigation and the science of crop water use.
