Barber Apprenticeship

Program Description

The Barber Apprenticeship program provides a comprehensive, hands-on pathway into the barbering profession through an "earn while you learn" model. This program combines paid, on-the-job training under the guidance of experienced barbers with structured classroom instruction through AWC. Apprentices will master the art and science of barbering, including precision haircutting, modern fading and tapering, classic straight-razor shaves, and beard/mustache design. The curriculum also integrates critical knowledge of safety and sanitation, professional ethics, client communication, and barbershop business fundamentals. This program is designed to prepare apprentices to successfully pass the Arizona State Board of Barbering licensure examinations.

This program prepares future barbers to excel in the industry by achieving these key learning outcomes:

  • Adhere to all Arizona State Board of Barbering standards for infection control, disinfection, and safety within a professional shop environment.
  • Demonstrate mastery of foundational and advanced barbering tools to perform precision cutting, fading, tapering, and styling on diverse hair types.
  • Execute expert-level straight-razor shaves and detailed beard/mustache designs while maintaining strict safety protocols.
  • Integrate knowledge of hair, skin, and scalp anatomy to perform professional consultations, identify conditions, and recommend appropriate treatments.
  • Implement barbershop business fundamentals, including marketing, retail operations, and client retention strategies, through effective communication and professional ethics.
  • Synthesize classroom learning (RTI) and on-the-job training (OJT) to successfully complete the Arizona State Board of Barbering written and practical examinations.
