9th Annual Non-Traditional Career Conference at AWC

August 21, 2017

The Arizona Western College Career and Technical Education Division and the Arizona Western College Office of Early College Experiences will be having their 9th Annual AWC Non-Traditional Careers Conference on Friday, September 22 from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm on AWC’s Yuma Campus.

A non-traditional career is defined as an occupation in which more than 75 percent of the workforce is of the opposite gender.  The conference will give students an opportunity to hear from industry leaders working in non-traditional careers.  The goal of the conference is to give these future college students a chance to work with AWC, their local partners and faculty in two interactive breakout sessions.  Over 300 Yuma and La Paz County high school students have been invited to attend the conference.

This year, the AWC Non-Traditional Career Conference is hoping to provide high school females an opportunity to experience hands activities relating to careers in: Fire Fighting/EMS, Law Enforcement, Welding, Construction, Automotive, Culinary Arts, Economics, Electrical, Informatics and Engineering careers. While male high school students will experience career skills specific to: Nursing, Early Childhood Education, Radiologic Technology, Hospitality, Massage Therapy, Sports Medicine, Graphic Design, Financing/Marketing, Accounting and Secondary Education.

During the Opening Session, there will be a keynote speaker to kick off the conference.  Then representatives from the University of Arizona-Yuma and Northern Arizona University-Yuma will speak about their programs and possibilities that students have in transferring to a 4-year university from AWC.
