Emotional Dysregulation: Who, what, why, and what now

When a student is struggling socially or emotionally, the impact often extends beyond the individual child and is felt by classmates, teachers, and staff. To respond effectively, we must first understand who is most vulnerable to emotional dysregulation and what truly distinguishes it from healthy emotional expression. We also need to look deeper into why these struggles occur by exploring the underlying causes. With this foundation, we can then focus on what to do now—using trauma‑informed strategies to prevent, support, and confidently de‑escalate behavioral health challenges across classrooms, hallways, and the broader school community.
