AWC Military Services offers one-stop-shop at MCAS-Yuma and YPG

Yuma, AZ (July 12, 2018) – If it wasn’t for the educational services that Arizona Western College offers at Marine Corps Air Station-Yuma, Sgt. Alana Karp probably wouldn’t have pursued higher education.

However, after learning about what resources were available on base during the welcome aboard brief for her unit, she’s now only two classes away from receiving her Associate in Arts degree.

“This AWC branch makes it easier for us to do everything from Tuition Assistance to registering for classes. They are so willing to help us reach our goals,” said Karp. 

AWC adds Geospatial Technology & Unmanned Aerial Systems certificate programs for Fall 2018

GIS & Informatics Summer Camp to be offered on campus for ages 14 and up July 23-26

Yuma, AZ (July 11, 2018) – Anytime you search for a location on mapping applications like Google Maps, you’re using geospatial technology.

Geospatial applications can be used in a variety of disciplines from redrawing district lines, to looking for and predicting crime patterns, to evaluating crop health and irrigation – just to name a few examples.

AWC welcomes new Director of Financial Services and Controller

Yuma, AZ (July 10, 2018) – Arizona Western College welcomed a new Director of Financial Services and Controller this summer. Michelle Landis recently joined AWC’s financial team with over 25 years of experience in finance.

After receiving her Master of Public Administration Degree from Western International University in 2018, Landis wanted to work at an Arizona community college to utilize her education coupled with her financial experience. She was drawn to AWC because of its vision.

AWC to offer TEC 100 class through new trades program in La Paz County

Enroll now for Fall 2018 to work toward a AAS degree in Industrial Technology

Parker, AZ (June 27, 2018) – Arizona Western College is expanding their offerings in La Paz County with the launch of a new trades program.

They’re kicking off a new Associate in Applied Science Degree program in Industrial Technology this fall by offering TEC 100, a core curriculum introductory skills course. The class will prepare students for certificates or degrees in technology and trades.

CTE Experience Week happening July 9-13

Yuma, AZ (June 27, 2018) –Arizona Western College’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department will be hosting CTE Experience Week featuring sessions on Law Enforcement, Woodworking, CPR, and Licensed Massage Therapy.
The five-day camp will be held from July 9-13 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. each day at the AWC Yuma Camps, 2020 S. Ave 8E. The classes will be limited to 20 participants 21 years of age and older.

High school students graduate from Law Enforcement ICE Summer Program at AWC

Yuma, AZ (June 25, 2018) – High school students recently graduated from a week-long Law Enforcement Industrial Cooperative Education (ICE) Student Summer Program hosted by Arizona Western College. The graduation took place on Saturday, June 23, in the Schoening Conference Center at the AWC Yuma Campus.

AWC Professor selected for PECOP Fellowship, to attend national conference

Yuma, AZ (June 18, 2018) – Arizona Western College Professor of Biology Joann Chang has been selected for a year-long Physiology Education Community of Practice (PECOP) Fellowship by the American Physiology Society (APS).

The PECOP project is designed to build a growing and dynamic community of undergraduate physiology educators who interact, share resources, and collaborate on an ongoing basis.

“It is a wonderful experience that will benefit me and the students and faculty at AWC,” she said.

Students graduate from first AWC Public Safety Dispatcher Academy

Yuma, AZ (June 12, 2018) – The first set of students to go through the new Arizona Western College Public Safety Dispatcher Academy have already been hired or are in the hiring process for dispatcher jobs, just days after graduation.

Former AWC student to be featured speaker at AVID Summer Institute

Yuma, AZ (June 7, 2018) – Each year more than 40,000 educators gather at one of 12 AVID Summer Institutes to learn how to successfully implement AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) in their schools.

One of the featured speakers at this year’s 2018 AVID Summer Institute in Denver will be Melanny Navarro, a former Arizona Western College student and current fifth-grade teacher at Roosevelt Elementary School. The professional learning event will take place from June 12-14.
