Empowering Women: leadHERship Workshops Continue at AWC San Luis Learning Center

February 19, 2024

San Luis, AZ (February 19, 2024) – The Arizona Western College San Luis Learning Center is proud to announce the continuation of leadHERship, an initiative aimed at fostering women empowerment and gender equality within the community. Following the tremendous success of the first workshop on January 29, where 30 enthusiastic participants actively engaged in empowering discussions and activities – including creating vision boards as a guide to manifesting their dreams in 2024 – the program is gearing up for its second workshop on Monday, February 26.

The leadHERship program, selected as one of 10 proposals and funded $20,000 by the 2024 AWC Innovation Fund, is driven by Dr. Sara Amani, Professor of Multilingual Composition/Specialist; Maria Guzman, Advising and Student Services Coordinator; and Susie Zambrano, Associate Dean for South Yuma County Services.

Dr. Sara Amani expresses, "The success of our first leadHERship workshop was truly inspiring. Witnessing both female and male students actively participating in this journey of women empowerment has strengthened the inclusive spirit of our mission. It reinforces that achieving gender equality requires the collaboration of people of all genders. We are not promoting special privileges for women alone; rather, we are breaking down stereotypes, and fostering a cooperative effort to create an equitable and empowered community."

In the week following the first workshop, 13 dedicated mentors, including AWC faculty and staff, volunteered to support the participants in the mentorship program. The leadHERship executive board paired participants with mentors who provide guidance, support, and advice, addressing personal, academic, and professional challenges. Monthly mentorship one-on-one sessions will focus on various areas, including personal growth, leadership, academic success, career development, networking, and entrepreneurship.

Upcoming Workshop - "Hello Body, Hello Soul: Reinventing Self-Esteem Through Wellness"

Scheduled for February 26, the second leadHERship workshop will focus on remaking self-esteem and self-image through wellness practices. Dr. Trisha Campbell, an AWC English professor and a trained and certified yogi, will facilitate the workshop, providing participants with insights into the intersection of wellness and self-esteem. She will guide participants through a soul-focused meditation, breathwork, writing and discussion, and wellness reports and checklists, among other things.

Dr. Trisha Campbell states, "Busy lives and media practices have taken many of us away from our bodies, breath, and wellness. This is especially true for women navigating a new world of beauty online. Self-image is frayed and self-esteem hinges on an easy and fraught comparison in social media, but meditation, breathwork, and intentional journaling can help guide us back to this thing called a ‘soul,’ reengaging the wisdom of the body, and thus reinventing our self-esteem through these wellness practices.”
