AWC’s Annual La Cosecha to Celebrate Graduates on May 17

May 1, 2018

Yuma, AZ (May 1, 2018) – Arizona Western College invites the media to attend the Annual La Cosecha (The Harvest) Banquet on Thursday, May 17, in the Schoening Conference Center, located in the 3C Building of the Yuma Campus. Registration begins at 6 p.m. and the program starts at 6:30 p.m.

The event is intended to celebrate AWC graduates transferring to a four-year university in the presence of their family, college officials, staff, and community guests. It’s also meant to serve as an encouragement for students as they continue their education in hopes they will return to work as professionals in the community.

All honored graduates will receive a certificate of recognition and a commemorative sash to signify persistence in attainment of their educational goal.

To be a part of the ceremony, students had to go through an application process and meet at least one of the following criteria: first-generation student, financial aid recipient, student with a disability, or experience with extenuating circumstances to complete their degree.
Scholarships will also be awarded at the banquet. The donors, most of whom are AWC graduates, will be thanked as many have been contributing for many years. One such AWC graduate/donor is Yuma attorney Candy Camarena, who started and has paid for the banquet portion of the event for the past 19 years with the intent of providing graduates with an experience they will encounter in their professional lives.

This year’s keynote speaker for the event will be AWC Coordinator of International Student Programs Aybuke Keehn. She came to the U.S. 11 years ago with a minimal English-speaking ability, but a huge talent for running that allowed her to study on an athletic scholarship. Keehn is a first-generation college graduate as well as the first female in her family to ever travel outside of her country and live away from her parents’ home prior to getting married.
