AWC encourages campus community to participate in 2020 Census

January 23, 2020

Yuma, AZ (January 23, 2020) – Multiple efforts are currently underway at Arizona Western College to ensure that the campus community gets counted as part of the 2020 Census.

The results of the census help to determine how federal dollars are distributed to states and communities. Getting a full and accurate count of Arizona citizens will play a vital role in securing funding for educational institutions. It could also help Arizona gain an additional seat in Congress.

“Arizona Western College recognizes the value and importance that the census plays in our community and thus will take an active role in supporting the collection of data from the Arizona Western College population,” said Shara Skinner, Coordinator of Student Leadership and Activities.

“For many AWC students, Census 2020 will be the first census that they will be answering themselves as opposed to living with their parents. Making sure that they are aware of the census and its importance is a key strategy to getting each student counted.”

Students, staff, and faculty at AWC will see more details about how to participate in the census as well as reminders planned through the www.azwestern.edu website, all-campus emails, email signatures, Blackboard messages, social media posts, promotional videos and graphics, informational displays and booths around campus and at events, banners, posters, postcards, student computer screensaver messages, an article in the Western Voice, KAWC Radio Public Service Announcements, an advertisement in the Yuma Sun, and a Toro Tuesday segment on Z93 and Outlaw Country.

When responding to the 2020 Census, college students should be counted where they live as of April 1, 2020. For most students, that means in their college town, not back home with their parents. Parents or guardians should only include children in college who live with them full time during the school year.

Individuals are encouraged to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone, or by mail by July 31. The Census will be open to everyone by April 1.
