Art club students create Arnold’s Lounge Mural at San Luis Learning Center

Yuma, AZ (May 26, 2021) – Arizona Western College students recently put the finishing touches on a mural at Arnold’s Lounge located at the San Luis Learning Center (SLLC), 1340 N 8th Ave.

Five students from the SLLC Art Curiosity and Secrets (ACAS) Club logged approximately 55 hours of their own time to complete the student-led project. The group spent most of their Spring Break (from March 30 to April 2) working on the mural and came to campus every Friday (from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., sometimes later) to complete the project by the last day of the spring semester (May 6).

“This was a 100 percent student-designed, executed, and driven endeavor,” said AWC Professor of Fine Arts Julie Floss. “ACAS members learned to collaborate with their client and as a group on all aspects of a large project. They successfully merged the theme Associate Dean Susanna Zambrano requested along with each artist’s contribution into a final cohesive design.”

The goal for the image was to honor and highlight the significant achievements of Arnold Trujillo, a long-time advisor in South Yuma County and member of the AWC Hall of Fame. The mural was also designed to represent students and the larger community, with education, family, and Veteran themes.

“I am filled with joy at the sight of such a beautiful mural every time I drive to campus,” said Associate Dean for South Yuma County Services Susanna Zambrano. “To have it reflect the life of Mr. Arnold Trujillo, who tirelessly advocates for students across the district, makes it exceptional. I’m proud and grateful to the artists and Professor Julie Floss for their hard work.”

The 8’ by almost 8’ project was completed using some of the remaining supplies from the Agricultural Science Mural that was funded through the 2019 Innovation Fund. ACAS students that worked on the mural included President Denisse Ibarra, Vice President Carol Valencia, Secretary Jessica Alvarez, and club members Jennifer Gonzalez and Eli Duarte.
