New agricultural-themed mural to be unveiled at ribbon cutting

Yuma, AZ (August 30, 2019) – The community is invited to join Arizona Western College students and staff to celebrate the unveiling of a new mural on campus on Thursday, Sept. 5.
The ribbon cutting ceremony to debut the 8-foot by 40-foot, agricultural-themed mural will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on the field behind the Agriculture building at the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave 8E.
The AWC San Luis Learning Center Art Curiosity and Secrets (ACAS) Club was invited to design and paint the mural by AWC Agriculture Science on the side of one of the department’s Conex storage containers. The project spanned 19 days from February to April, for a total of 88 hours of work. In addition to ACAS club members, students from Gila Ridge and Cibola high schools also worked on the mural as well.
“A mural project has been a long-term goal of our club. We view it as an exciting opportunity that will inspire young artists and showcase more art around the campus,” said AWC Professor of Fine Arts Julie Floss. “Making this mural for the Agriculture Science Department has brought a pop of color to what used to be a plain view of a Conex box from Otondo Dr. and it has also increased the presence of art within our community.”
The project was one of 12 proposals approved through the 2019 Innovation Fund, where staff and students presented a variety of ideas in hopes of being awarded funds to make their initiatives a reality. A total of $1,538 was awarded for the ACAS Club Project.
“This was a great way to collaborate between everyone involved,” said AWC Agriculture Science Manager Leigh Loughead. “The students learned how to create a budget for materials, create a video pitch for the project, and how to work with each other on what turned out to be a great depiction of agriculture in Yuma County.”
