Students earn finalist title, top state award at research competition


Yuma, AZ (January 29, 2020) – Three students from Arizona Western College were recognized as Southwest Regional Finalists for their work on a Student Research League (SRL) competition project.

AWC students Misael Marquez, Cynthia Spence, and Wendy Szeto were named regional finalists during the American Mathematical Association for Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) annual conference in Milwaukee in November. They also earned first place in the competition for Arizona. Each team member earned a monetary award of $200, a plaque, and a certificate for their achievements.

AWC encourages campus community to participate in 2020 Census


Yuma, AZ (January 23, 2020) – Multiple efforts are currently underway at Arizona Western College to ensure that the campus community gets counted as part of the 2020 Census.  

The results of the census help to determine how federal dollars are distributed to states and communities. Getting a full and accurate count of Arizona citizens will play a vital role in securing funding for educational institutions. It could also help Arizona gain an additional seat in Congress.

Nominations sought for AWC Hall of Fame


Yuma, AZ (January 23, 2020) – Arizona Western College is seeking nominations for the 2020 AWC Hall of Fame. Installed in 2013, the AWC Hall of Fame currently has 16 honorees, including 2019 inductees Dr. Don Schoening, Dan Beaver, and Arnold Trujillo.

AWC is looking for nominees from Yuma and La Paz counties who have made a significant contribution to the mission of the college, or distinguished themselves in service to the larger world.

Professor Monica Ketchum to be honored with Distinguished Artist award


Yuma, AZ (January 16, 2020) – Arizona Western College Professor of History Monica Ketchum will be recognized as a Distinguished Artist by the Calexico Arts Council on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Ketchum will be honored during the Leaf Unveiling Program from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center, 421 Heffernan Ave., in Calexico, California. The ceremony will be accompanied by an exhibition of her work. Her pieces will remain on display for public viewing from Jan. 21-23. The gallery will be open to the public from 4 to 7 p.m. each day.

AWC to hold ribbon cutting for Rosemary’s Kitchen for International Students


Yuma, AZ (January 16, 2020) – International students at Arizona Western College now have the opportunity to utilize the culinary kitchen to prepare a meal from their home country through a new partnership with the Career and Technical Education Culinary Arts program.

Since cooking is not allowed in the residence halls, Rosemary Harrison spoke during the Horizon Symposium in November to bring forward the idea of having a space available for international students to get a sense of home through their cooking.
