Students earn scholarships during annual showcase


Yuma, AZ (May 13, 2019) – Eleven Arizona Western College students took home scholarship awards during an annual Student Showcase event on May 7.

Since 2008, the showcase has served as a platform to highlight a wide variety of student projects, and over time it has also become an opportunity for students to earn scholarships. Funds are made available for students to apply for thanks to a $5,000 donation from the Gowan Company, who has been providing showcase scholarships for the past five years.

AWC 2019 Commencement


Yuma, AZ (May 9, 2019) - Arizona Western College, Northern Arizona University-Yuma Branch Campus, University of Arizona-Yuma Academic Center, and Arizona State University ASU@Yuma programs announce the 2019 Commencement. The ceremony will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 17, at Veterans Memorial Stadium located at 7150 E. 24th Street, next to Gila Ridge High School.

New Cocopah Language Course offered this summer


Yuma, AZ (May 7, 2019) – Arizona Western College is offering a new Cocopah Language Course over the summer at the AWC Somerton Center, located on Somerton Middle School’s campus, 1011 N. Somerton Ave.

The 1-credit class will be held on Tuesdays from 5:45 to 7:05 p.m. and begins May 28.

Students will have the opportunity to learn vocabulary, basic grammatical structures, and useful phrases and sentences related to everyday life. The course will be taught by Cocopah tribal members Pauline Koolick and Becky Stevens.

Public-Private Investment Creates the Arizona Center for Student Success at Ten Community Colleges in the State


Phoenix, AZ (May 6, 2019) – The Office of the Governor, Helios Education Foundation, Pima Community College Foundation, and the Arizona Community Foundation have jointly awarded a $1,350,000 grant to create the Arizona Center for Student Success at the ten community colleges in the state. This newly created center will assist traditionally underserved student’s complete certificates and associate degree programs that move them directly into high-demand jobs or transfer programs into the university system.

Xi Zeta Chapter continues to build endowment


Yuma, AZ (May 6, 2019) – The Xi Zeta Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority recently gave $5,000 to build their endowment with the Arizona Western College Foundation. Scholarships made through this endowment support first time college students from Yuma County.

AWC La Paz to celebrate high-achieving graduates


Yuma, AZ (May 2, 2019) – Arizona Western College La Paz will be celebrating the achievements of degree and certificate recipients at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, at the Parker Learning Center, 1109 Geronimo Ave.

Participants will receive a certificate of recognition for their accomplishments during the Celebration of Leaders in Education event. The students have been selected by their professors to receive these awards. High school students that are dual-enrolled at AWC will also be recognized.

AWC Fine Arts to present full lineup of May concerts


Yuma, AZ (April 30, 2019) – The Arizona Western College Fine Arts Department has a number of performances on the calendar for the community to enjoy during the month of May.

The AWC Jazz Ensemble will be performing a spring concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at the AWC Theater, 2020 S. Ave. 8E.

AWC Pep Band is performing an open-air patio concert from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Thursday, May 2. Students will be performing on the covered patio of the 3C Building near the AWC Yuma Campus Starbucks, 2020 S. Ave. 8E.
