March 21, 2024Students from Cesar Chavez Elementary to visit Yuma Campus
Yuma, AZ (March 21, 2024) – Arizona Western College has invited fifth-grade students from Cesar Chavez Elementary School in San Luis, Arizona to experience college life at the Yuma Campus on Wednesday, March 27.
Fifth-graders will start the morning with a mock new student orientation before participating in three mini-college classes taught by faculty members from AWC and partner state universities. Professors volunteer to teach the elementary students 25-minute lessons on their areas of expertise, giving students a first-hand look into a college classroom.
Students will also enjoy lunch on campus and culminate the experience with an achievement ceremony. Participants will also receive I'm Going to College T-shirts with the year they will complete their bachelor's degree (2035).
“Embark on the journey of learning, where every day is a chance to discover new wonders and dream about the endless possibilities your future holds,” said Biridiana Martinez, AWC Outreach, Recruitment and Early College Program Director. “The I’m Going to College event motivates students to look forward to their educational journey with excitement and curiosity about career opportunities and dual enrollment through an exceptional hands-on experience.”
AWC has invited elementary-age students to campus to inspire them to consider higher education and create a college-going culture in the community for over a decade. A total of 3,032 students have come through the program since its inception in 2010. The fall and spring I’m Going to College events have been funded in part by the Burton Family Foundation.
