Graduates to be honored at La Cosecha banquet

Yuma, AZ (May 8, 2019) – Arizona Western College will celebrate graduates during the annual La Cosecha (The Harvest) banquet on Thursday, May 16, in the Schoening Conference Center, located in the 3C Building of the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E. Registration begins at 5:45 p.m. and the program starts at 6:30 p.m.

The event recognizes the success stories of AWC graduates transferring to a four-year university in the presence of their family, college officials, staff, and community guests. It also serves as an encouragement for students as they continue their education, in hopes they will return to work as professionals in the community.

All honored graduates will receive a certificate of recognition and a commemorative sash to signify persistence in attainment of their educational goal.

To be a part of the ceremony, students had to go through an application process and meet at least one of the following criteria: first-generation student, financial aid recipient, student with a disability, or experience with extenuating circumstances to complete their degree.

Scholarships will also be awarded at the banquet. Donors, most of whom are AWC graduates, will be thanked as many have been contributing for many years. One such AWC graduate/donor is Yuma attorney Candy Camarena, who started and has paid for the banquet portion of the event for over 20 years with the intent of providing graduates with an experience they will encounter in their professional lives.

This year’s keynote speaker for the event will be Carlos Ramos, a constituent affairs representative with the Office of U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema. Ramos is a first-generation college graduate and a product of the Yuma community. He is a Yuma High School, AWC, Northern Arizona University-Yuma, and Arizona State University graduate.

The media is invited to attend this event.
