Community invited for Art Garden ribbon cutting

May 7, 2019

Yuma, AZ (May 7, 2019) – Join Arizona Western College on Thursday, May 9, for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the campus Art Garden, located on the east side of the Center for Instructional Excellence (CIE) Building at the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E.

A collaboration between several college departments was formed to improve and beautify the space between the CIE building and the Student Success Center, creating opportunities for public performance and art exhibition. The garden currently features student artwork including ceramic pieces and 9x9” clay tiles with inscribed images inspired by local petroglyphs.

The event will begin with poetry readings at 11 a.m., followed by the ribbon cutting at 12 p.m. where AWC President Dr. Daniel Corr will be creating his own petroglyph tile along with other college administration and leaders.

There will also be a native plant display by Environmental Science students as well as a guitar ensemble performance at the event, which will run concurrently with an AWC Art Gallery Student Art Exhibit reception.

The Art Garden Beautification Project was one of 12 proposals approved through the 2018 Innovation Fund, where staff presented a variety of ideas in hopes of being awarded funds to make their initiatives a reality. A total of $6,300 was awarded for the Art Garden Beautification Project.
