3rd Annual First-Generation Celebration to be held Nov. 6

October 30, 2019

Event to feature speakers, resource fair, and film screening

Yuma, AZ (October 30, 2019) – With over 60% of the population at Arizona Western College identifying as first-generation college goers, the campus aims to make resources and activities more accessible for students, especially those who may need additional support and guidance.

AWC will be holding their 3rd Annual First-Generation Celebration on Wednesday, Nov. 6, as part of a national effort to celebrate the contributions and successes of first-generation college students, staff, and faculty at institutions across the country. A first-generation student is defined as an individual whose parents have not earned a bachelor’s degree. If a student’s older sibling has earned a bachelor’s degree, that student is still considered first-generation as they do not have the parental understanding to navigate higher education without extended support from the institution.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the event, first-generation speakers will be sharing their stories, a proclamation will be read by AWC Vice President for Student Services Bryan Doak, and a variety of departments will be holding a resource fair at the event to share what tools are available for current and potential first-generation students as a way to help them navigate through academic and professional pathways.

The celebration is open to community members from Yuma and La Paz counties and will be held in the grassy area between the 3C and AS buildings on the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E. The First-Generation Celebration event will be happening in conjunction with the AWC Foundation Chili Cook-Off, which will be taking place at the same time and location to raise funds for student scholarships.

A screening of the documentary “First Generation” will also be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Frances Morris Boardroom as part of the First-Generation Celebration. The 2011 film follows four first-generation students across the country in their pursuit of higher education and looks at the challenges they face in earning college degrees.
