This course prepares the learner for taking the state examination to become a Certified Nursing Assistant or Licensed Nursing Assistant. The Arizona State Board of Nursing requires evidence of citizenship or nationality for state certification (CNA). Fingerprints and licensure fee needed for Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) certification.

Field of Interest
This course focuses on applying client self-care concepts and basic procedures relative to fundamentals of nursing, communication, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, legal/ethical issues, and aging. The concepts and procedures are introduced in the classroom and practiced in the college laboratory before implementation under faculty supervision in a clinical setting. This course prepares the learner for taking the certification examination to become a certified nursing assistant.

Type
Students who successfully complete the course requirements will be earn college credit and an occupational certificate from Arizona Western College.  Students will also be prepared to take the Arizona State Board of Nursing licensure test.


What You'll Learn

Upon completion of the class students will be able to:

  • demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication with clients, family members, staff nurses, co-workers.
  • record observations using appropriate medical terminology and abbreviations in completing clinical assignments.
  • adhere to client’s rights as set forth in the “Client’s Bill of Rights”.
  • maintain standards set forth to promote client safety and comfort.
  • perform basic first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the Heimlich Maneuver.
  • apply principles of basic nutrition while preparing, serving and feeding clients.
  • identify the organization of the human body, its systems, structure and functions.
  • demonstrate general principles of medical asepsis.
  • demonstrate nursing skills in the college laboratory and in client care settings.
  • identify factors and appropriate actions to prevent suspected abuse and report suspected abuse to appropriate authorities.
  • discuss legal and ethical issues related to care of clients in health care agencies. 
  • describe the role of the nursing assistant in extended care and other health care facilities. 
  • provide personal care for assigned clients

Registration Process: Because students earn college credit from Arizona Western College, application and admission to AWC is required

Other program requirements include proof of legal residence in the US, CPR Certification, Fingerprint Clearance, Tuberculosis screening, and drug test. 

Interested students will meet with an AZ Quest Grant Coordinator to determine eligibility for the program.
