AWC Community Band to hold second spring concert

April 21, 2022

Guest artist Rama Kumaran to be featured, host public clinic

Yuma, AZ (April 21, 2022) – The Arizona Western College Community Band will present its second concert of the spring semester on Monday, May 2.

The “Aeolian Tones” concert will be held at 7 p.m. in the Schoening Conference Center in the 3C Building at the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E. Internationally-respected flutist Rama Kumaran will be the guest artist for the performance.

Prior to the concert, Kumaran will lead a clinic from 4 to 5 p.m. in Room MU 102 at the AWC Music Building. The master class will include performances, demonstrations, and coaching student musicians.

Both the concert and the clinic are free and open to the public.

A self-described storyteller and multi-instrumentalist, Kumaran is the youngest-ever winner of the American National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition. He has degrees from Vanderbilt University and the Conservatorium of Amsterdam, where he specialized in historical flutes. A long-running collaboration with composer and producer Herman Beeftink resulted in spectacular recordings with Kumaran overdubbing all of the flute, piccolo, and alto flute parts, as well as a studio album. Not content with the flute, his other proficient instruments include the violin and piano. He also has a passionate interest in science, has directed plays and taught cinematography, and is a budding horse whisperer.
