AWC Theatre prepares for fall production of 14 by José Casas

Yuma, Ariz. (August 19, 2026) – Arizona Western College Theatre department is hosting open auditions for the fall production of 14 by José Casas. The production provides an opportunity for performers to participate in a mainstage AWC Theatre production while engaging with a play that speaks directly to the history and communities of the Arizona border region.

“One of the things that makes 14 especially meaningful for us to produce at AWC is that this play is deeply connected to Yuma and the Arizona border region,” said AWC Theatre Professor and Director, Giovanni Delgado Ferreira.  “I’m excited to invite both our students and members of the community into the audition room and to build a company that reflects the many different voices and experiences that make up our community.”

14 is a documentary-style play inspired by the deaths of fourteen Mexican migrants who died while crossing the Arizona desert in May 2001. Through a collection of characters from across Arizona, the play explores immigration, race, identity, family, belonging, prejudice, and life along the U.S.–Mexico border. Two of the 14 monologues are completely in Spanish.

Auditions will be held on Monday, August 24 and Tuesday, August 25 in 30-minute time slots between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., with callbacks on Wednesday, August 26.

If selected, cast members must be able to commit to the time requirements, including weeknight rehearsals through November, and the performance dates of November 19-22.
