Always With Me - Día de Muertos

My project is a one-minute animation about "Día de Muertos." I wanted to turn a dream into something visible: what if we could spend one more day with a loved one who passed away? In the video, I present a scenario where I spend time with my great-grandmother, sharing with her my life today and everything I have achieved. The goal of this story is to show that even if our loved ones are not physically here, their spirit and love stay with us forever.

I chose the principle of Aesthetics & Creative Thinking because I made this animation frame by frame in Photoshop. This was a massive task that resulted in 6,288 layers for all the elements (parts of each puppet, shapes, backgrounds...) and a total of 1,572 complete images for the animation. This process required two weeks of intense effort because I had to use my imagination like a camera, thinking about every angle and movement to make the scene feel accurate. This drawing captures a playful moment between a curious cat and a dramatic appearance of Magikarp from the Pokémon world. I wanted to combine humor and fantasy by placing a familiar game character into a natural landscape with volcanoes and water. The contrast between the calm environment and the sudden “KARP!” moment reflects surprise, imagination, and the fun side of storytelling through art.

Couth: Make it make sense

My project is something I am currently developing and working toward patenting. It is an app called Couth, built around improving communication between people. The structure uses three AI systems, one for each person, and a central shared system that helps translate and organize communication. When users already have a mental health provider, that central system can be guided by professionals, so there is real direction behind it rather than random or surface-level responses. This idea comes from what I have seen over the last few years working with people. Communication is one of the first things to break down, even when intentions are good. I have seen it in leadership, in the workplace, and in everyday life. Many people struggle to explain what they mean or feel, especially when emotions are involved. This is true across generations.

Younger people often struggle with face-to-face communication, while older generations are not always comfortable opening up or explaining themselves clearly. In some cases, communication is even more limited, such as with nonverbal individuals. This kind of system could help bridge that gap. It could support something as meaningful as a nonverbal grandson communicating with a nonverbal grandfather, or help couples take the time to understand each other at their own pace and learn how the other person communicates.

To this day, I have never worked with a mental health professional myself. At the same time, I know that support like that can be expensive or hard to access, and even apps like BetterHelp are not always realistic for everyone. This project is meant to be a practical option for people who are capable of introspection but need a way to organize their thoughts and communicate them clearly. It is not meant to replace professional help, but to support people who are trying to work through things on their own or alongside existing care. I am developing this project independently, using the resources available to me through AWC, including time spent in the library researching, thinking through the structure, and working out how something like this could actually function in a real-world setting.

This process has required me to stay self-directed and disciplined while building something from the ground up. The primary Guiding Principle this project represents is Application and Creation of Knowledge. I am taking real-world experience and turning it into something practical that people can use in their daily lives. This is not theory, it is something built from observation and problem solving. It also connects to Collaboration and Inclusion, because the goal is not for one person to win an argument, but for both people to be understood. The system is designed to create space for both sides, not just one. Working on this project has shown me how complex communication really is. A lot of problems come from misunderstanding, not bad intent. It has also reinforced that useful ideas do not always come from a classroom. They come from paying attention and trying to fix what is right in front of you. What I am still curious about is how far something like this can go, especially when combined with professional guidance and real-world use. I want to continue developing it and see what it could become with the right people involved.

A few years ago, I had something horrible happen to me from two men I thought I could trust, and all I can think about is how I froze instead of fighting. I want to paint a rabbit frozen in fear, in a wolf's mouth. A lot of people who have been assaulted don't go into fight or flight due to maybe the fact that the attacker is bigger or stronger, or that fighting or running wouldn't do anything. As a victim of sexual assault who froze like prey in the jaws of its predator, I relate to how a rabbit feels in the scenario where it's being hunted and about to be killed. My painting isn't going to be soft because I'm tired of the trauma that I and so many others have gone through being watered down, and to show people who have been in the same scenario as I was that I see them. that they and their trauma are seen instead of being discredited because they didn't run or fight back.

My project is a personal portfolio website that I created as part of my Advanced Interactivity and Graphics class, where we were challenged to build a fully functional website from the ground up using the skills we've developed throughout the course. This project reflects the Guiding principle of Aesthetics & Creative Thinking, because I really focused on making the site feel like me–clean, intentional, and visually engaging. I experimented with layout choices like staggered elements, along with typography and spacing, to create a strong visual flow and better showcase my work. A big part of this process was coding the site using HTML and CSS, which allowed me to fully control the structure and styling of the design. At the same time, it also represents Application & Creation of Knowledge, since I had to apply both design principles and technical web skills to bring everything together into a working site. Through this process, I learned how to balance creativity with functionality and gained a better understanding of how to present myself professionally as a designer. I'm still curious about how I can keep pushing my style further and make my portfolio more interactive and memorable as I continue to grow.

I will be showcasing both my artwork and written poetry, two or three will be framed to present to the audience, while others are hung on a tri-fold display board– I am thinking of using a binder to show too, I am unsure how much I will bring though a decent amount should do. However my curiosity is to see how far I can reach my ability in poems and drawings. Project: Haven has been with me since sophomore year, inspired by someone once dear to me alongside other visuals and books that formed this little ‘island’, which perhaps the principles of ethical growth alongside wellness and inclusion play a part in this. The principle of aesthetics and creative thinking is one I am most comfortable, above else might add tiny trinkets here and there and from what I’ve learned, sometimes art can have its meaning made by the creator though not everyone will have the same interpretation, we all have different metaphors or perspectives, after all what is the point of creativity if we only believe on a single thing; its human that we tell stories– make things come into the living that was the reason I had chosen the principles of aesthetics and creative thinking, an expression on how I think– the way I make tales happen through words and pictures instead of talking. Allow the people to choose what they see, if they do ask me then I will tell them or perhaps chime in for impish fun.

Branerosus Hyperaggression Syndrome: A Neurotropic Viral Model of Behavioral Dysregulation

My project, Branerosus Hyperaggression Syndrome (BHS), is a fictional study based on scientific concepts that describes a virus affecting the nervous system and causing a loss of behavioral control, particularly increased aggression. In this project, I explained the virus’s structure, pathophysiology, transmission, and treatment, while connecting these ideas to concepts I have learned, such as RNA viruses, the immune system, GABA, and brain function. The main Guiding Principle my project represents is Application & Creation of Knowledge, as I applied my knowledge of pathophysiology to create a new but realistic disease model. In addition, my project also reflects Analytical Reasoning & Metacognition, as I analyzed the relationship between biological mechanisms and behavior (for example, decreased GABA leading to increased aggression). It also relates to Ethical Growth & Wellness by addressing the issue of bioterrorism and the importance of protecting public health. Through this project, I learned about the close connection between the nervous system and the immune system, and I remain curious about how real-world viruses can influence human behavior.

A vocal performance is a song TBD that I will sing at the showcase. It represents creative thinking due to the artistic choices made in the vocal performance, and the emotion that is portrayed. This principle is expressed in my project through the interpretation I give to the lyrics, and in a way it also includes creation of knowledge, because art in itself is a form of creation. As a result of this project (singing), I discovered my own voice and my passion for singing. I learned that having a way to express yourself contributes to every part of your being. Mentally, physically and spiritually.

Spanglish - Feature (Audio)

My project is an audio feature exploring Spanglish as the heart of our binational identity. Created for my class "JRN 150 - Applied Journalism", this piece was so impactful that it was chosen to help relaunch the KAWC podcast "Siendo Primero." The project aligns primarily with the Guiding Principle for Learning "Collaboration & Inclusion" because it centers on the lived experiences of students who navigate life between these two languages: Spanish and English. By weaving together student voices with the expertise of Professor Daniel Herrera, I created a space to validate a way of speaking that is often dismissed. My goal was to show that Spanglish is more than a "mix"; it is a vital tool for survival and a meeting ground where our community finally feels at home.

Additionally, it reflects the principle "Application & Creation of Knowledge" by taking journalism theories from the classroom and applying them to a real-world media production. Through this project, I discovered that language is a living thing that evolves to help us belong. I learned that my voice has the power to challenge the idea of "correct" speech and celebrate the reality of our bilingual world. Working on this feature taught me how to bridge research with emotions to tell a story that matters. Even after completing the project, I am still curious about the future of this "mixture." I want to explore how we can move Spanglish from our personal lives into professional and academic spaces, making the world catch up to the beautiful, shifting reality of how we actually communicate. The San Luis local library is where my interest in art came to fruition, a place I personally never saw myself too interested in going. I use to be a photographer but, I usually was never satisfied with a lot of the photographs I took. I didn't really find it all too fun that the camera did majority of the work for me so, I wanted something new and refreshing for a hobby. I love that drawing gives you the ability to perceive the world to your liking. Being able to use your imagination to create something new, a new vision is what got me hooked on the idea that I wanted to take drawing seriously. I'm someone who gets distracted fairly easily with technology. To separate my self from that world, my local library seemed like the ideal choice for me.

Also, the pandemic was nearing it's end during that time. I wanted a place where I be out in public around others since, most of my time was spent locked at home to avoid getting sick. I would personally go to the library daily for 7 hours throughout the week just to get away from being home all day. I found the library to be a place of healing for me since it always gave me something to look forward to day after day. I learned so much from the one year span I spent going there. I never expected art to be my passion, nor did I expect to find my passion so early in life. I also have to thank the library staff for making my experience there wonderful, they were a motivator to my craft. There were a couple of instances where I wanted to quit art, but this group gave me a purpose to continue following my interests. As a thank you, I spent about a week drawing this image of the library as as a token of my appreciation. Now my question is, where would this path in life take me. Will I obtain a career in the art industry? Or will I obtain a career in Information Technology? I hope for it to be the first option.

This painting represents an angel standing in alone in a quiet, shadowed forest under the moonlight. I only used acrylic paint and added glitter to the wings and also the bottom of the dress to make the figure stand out and appear more ethereal. The bright white wings contrast with the dark surroundings, emphasizing isolation. Subtle red tones suggest emotional pain, while the falling feathers symbolize letting go or losing parts of oneself. The overall piece explores loneliness, vulnerability, and inner conflict.

How Stress affects creativity

I wanted to see how stress affects someone's creativity. I asked artists if they are willing to do a survey and asked about their perceived stress levels and their creativity levels. I want to know if someone with moderate levels of stress creates art more than someone with low or high levels of stress. I am using Aesthetics and Creative Thinking since my research is all based on creativity. This principle applies to my research by showing me how stress can affect a person's creativity and gives me a better understanding of how stress can impact art. I learned that the results were higher in moderate and high levels of stress. All the creativity levels were about the same as the stress levels. I am curious if people with lower stress levels can create more

Measles Ressurection

Highlighting the measles coming back into the United States, this project exposes its impact in an anatomical and physiological way. For instance, the virus being contagious can greatly affect the respiratory system. In return, this may potentially weaken the immune system. As a result, these complications lead to pneumonia, chronic immune damage, and brain inflammation. The purpose of my measles project is to show how it affects the body based on the symptoms, transmission rates, and physiological effects. Additionally, by using peer-reviewed research and current data, the measles project will show a role in declining vaccination rates and the misinformation that has also spread around about the measles coming back. Overall, it aims to educate others about the seriousness of vaccines and health risks connected to the return of the disease.

Sewing Pomni’s outfit from The Amazing Digital Circus from scratch was a creative project focused on recreating the character’s colorful jester costume. Including the oversized hat, bold red-and-blue color blocking, and playful silhouette. The primary guiding principle of this project was attention to detail, accurately capturing Pomni’s expressive and slightly chaotic design required careful observation and patience in both pattern-making and assembly. This principle was expressed through meticulously matching colors, shaping the exaggerated hat structure, and ensuring the proportions reflected the character’s animated appearance rather than realistic clothing norms. Additional principles included problem-solving, especially when figuring out how to construct unusual shapes like the floppy hat points and creating my own striped fabric. Since working from scratch without a pre-made pattern involved a lot of trial and error, especially with the hat. Through this project, I discovered how important planning and fabric choice are to achieving the right look and learned new techniques for sewing curved seams and structured costume elements. I also gained a deeper appreciation for costume design as a blend of art and engineering. I have been sewing since I was 12 and I have a great love for it. Even after completing the costume I still think about different ways I could have made it or different materials. This costume was a labor of love and lots of troubleshooting!

The Struggle of Creation

In my project I will showcase my progress of art in the past 2 years while attending Arizona Western College. With that, I will talk about how I have learned and applied the knowledge that I have gotten from taking these art classes and the struggle of actually creating something that some people, who aren't artists, don't see with artists. They think artists can just continue to create, but I want to show the struggle of an actual artist and sometimes the pain of life struggles that bring forth. This would be in writing and be vocally explaining each piece. The pieces with have a variety of skill showcase and my journey through the years of my studio arts associates. Which would be 2D and 3D pieces with descriptions.

The primary guiding principle with my project is the application and creation of knowledge with art, It is expressed in my project/presentation in the way of showing art pieces I have created and artist statements under them. There will be around 5 to 6 2D pieces and 5 to 6 3D pieces. I will show a variety of skill that I've created in both pieces that will also be in the artist's statement. Another learning principle that could be in my project is aesthetic and creative thinking, I have a very unique style and fun style which could apply to the aesthetics of a project and the creative thinking is all of the choices I've done to create any use the composition in my pieces. I have learned so much in the past 2 years when doing my studio art degree that has evolved me to become a better artist and soon to be an art teacher for others. I have learned about problem solving in my own art which I didn't want to learn beforehand and I have learned how to create better compositions and take criticism more effectively. I'm curious on how I will continue to evolve and curious how other people think and see of my art and even take criticism from them. Also I would understand what I could do to improve better and what I can do to help others.

Colors Overlays and Expressions Perceptions

My project is an academic research poster aimed to test whether or not a color-overlay over pictures can affect how a person may perceive an expression. The main Guiding Principle for learning illustrated in my research poster is most definitely, “Application & Creation of Knowledge.” To reflect this principle, the research poster appeals to a traditional scientific poster, using the scientific method as a medium. Firstly, using independent variable (color-overlay) versus the dependent variable (the perception of the expressions) to determine whether or not the results can be scientifically relevant and placing them into practice by creating surveys to test and collect consenting participants' responses (their anonymity is secured.) After this, the results were analyzed and posted.

An additional guiding principle would most definitely be, “Aesthetics and Creative thinking.” The main subject of the study’s research was to create more evidence on how colors intertwine with every day thinking on what influences humans perceptions with color specifically. What color is math? What color is the feeling of joy? If I watch a scary movie, what color would I imagine? Should a hospital be blue or green? Colors are always influencing human decisions subconsciously, and that part of creative art is the most inspiring to explore. But how does the project itself represent this? The poster is filled with colorful and a few personally made online-art (the main study itself also contained this.) It represents the six main colors (red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple), as they have main roles in the study itself. This project has taught me that there is so much more to learn and perfect. I believed that my project would be flawless, since I hyper-focused and added too much detail. The truth is, that detail is not necessary unless it adds substance to your idea and results, specifically with research based learning. In the end, I focused on too many little things to understand that a main focus was missed. I learned talking to many people on campus was a joy, and I felt more confident to walk up to strangers for a chat, instead of walking by, not knowing about their ideas. I’m curious what else I can do as an experiment that relates to creativity. How would my project differ with another kind of function (like using a landscape instead of a person)? It was fun! My project, "Studies in Form and Body," explores the human figure through sculpture alongside functional ceramics like bowls and cups. I focus on representing a range of body types to reflect real people, while also creating hand-shaped vessels meant for everyday use. Together, these pieces show how form can be both expressive and functional, and how something as simple as clay can hold meaning in different ways. This project best represents Aesthetics & Creative Thinking because it allowed me to experiment with form, challenge ideas of a “perfect” body, and connect two different types of art. My sculptures highlight variation and individuality, while my ceramics apply those same ideas to objects people actually use. I enjoyed finding that balance between meaning and function, and this process helped me become more intentional and confident in my work. Moving forward, I’m curious about how I can keep pushing this idea, especially by finding new ways to blend art that people see with art they interact with.

Relieve Mind Sets

Let me introduce myself, I’m Guadalupe, a full-time student attending this semester, which has been tremendously challenging with both stress and anxiety. One of the ways I reduce anxiety is by painting and scribbling every day. While I scribble on paper to express my frustration, once restoring a peaceful mind set, I look back on the paper and draw a creative imagining using the scribbled paper. Another way to reduce stress is by painting. I present three colorful paintings of loving dogs on how they are described based on their behaviors. This Guide Principle expressed in this project is (Aesthetics & Creative Thinking). This project can benefit me and others, helping to relieve stress and foster a creative mindset in kids and adults alike. Scribbling on paper can be turned into art and can express your emotions through it. Painting is another healthy way to focus on the positive, express what makes me happy, and socializing with dogs motivates me every day, allowing me to express it on the canvas. This Principle can be expressed in (Ethical Growth and wellness), scribble art can build students’ growth and wellness, handling stress and anger, requiring a time to release or calm peaceful emotions on a new canvas. During this project, I discovered an easy and creative way to reduce stress during the day, which can help others with the same experiences. Additionally, I'm passionate about animals and want to learn more about health and behavior. I wonder, could this project help other people with stress in their school or workplace?

The Relationship Between Caffeine Consumption and Self-reported Stress Levels Among College Students

This poster is about the relationship between caffeine consumption and stress levels among college students. It focuses on understanding whether drinking caffeine, like coffee or energy drinks, is connected to how stressed students feel in their daily academic lives. It’s based on something very common, since a lot of students rely on caffeine to stay awake, study, or keep up with their responsibilities. In my presentation, I’ll talk about the main idea of the study, which is that students who drink more caffeine may experience higher levels of stress compared to those who don’t drink as much. I’ll also briefly explain how the information was collected through a survey, and who participated in it, to give context to the research. Lastly, I’ll explain the overall conclusion of the study and what it suggests about students’ habits. I’ll also mention some simple recommendations, like reducing caffeine intake and finding healthier ways to manage stress, such as sleeping better, organizing time, and taking breaks.

Messages in a Bottle

Last spring semester, I completed a capstone project for the Honors Program, and as an English major I decided to write a poetry book titled “Messages in a Bottle”. This novel is a collection of 80 freestyle poems where some are more personal than others but all of them are pieces of my soul that I am sending out into the beyond. My project aligns with Aesthetics and Creative Thinking as my poems include a mix of emotions, experience, and imagination. I also spent many months writing, editing, and organizing my novel into the perfect sequence in order to fulfill my artistic vision. I believe my project also falls under the Application & Creation of Knowledge as I had spent so long wanting to write a novel but always felt too intimated to truly try. This project not only allowed me to explore the creative realm of writing as well as my own personal style, but it also gave me an opportunity to apply all of the literary knowledge that I have learned over my school years into my own original work. This project means a lot to me as poetry has always interested me, especially when I was in high school. However, it wasn’t until I was tasked with this capstone project that I was able to truly dive into my love for it. Crafting this poetry book was not only a great creative outlet but also an enlightening experience filled with excitement and passion. The pride I felt when I knew I was finished with my project was a feeling I will never forget and one I yearn to feel again. I’m not sure if my book will ever be on shelves in bookstores but I know that all of my hard work is still an accomplishment nonetheless. I learned so much about myself during this process, not only as a writer but also as a person, and I look forward to working on future projects. I have many ideas planned and I wonder when the next opportunity will arise and when inspiration will choose to strike. Hopefully it is soon, and perhaps I will be able to share more new poems at the AWC showcase next year too.

T-Streak Technique: Isolating Pure Bacterial Colonies

This project focuses on the T-streak technique, a basic microbiology method used to isolate pure bacterial colonies from a mixed sample. In this technique, a sterile inoculating loop is used to streak bacteria across an agar plate in a T-shaped pattern, gradually diluting the number of cells in each section. After incubation, individual colonies grow in the final streaked areas, each originating from a single bacterial cell. This method is important because it allows scientists to obtain pure cultures, which are necessary for identifying bacteria, performing tests such as Gram staining, and studying microbial characteristics. The T-streak technique is widely used in microbiology laboratories, clinical diagnostics, and research.

This project, titled “How Antibiotics Kill Bacteria: The Microscopic Battle,” explores how antibiotics destroy bacterial cells by targeting essential structures and processes studied in Microbiology. The poster explains three main mechanisms: disruption of the cell wall, inhibition of protein synthesis, and blockage of DNA replication, with examples such as Penicillin, Tetracycline, and Ciprofloxacin. It also highlights the growing problem of Antibiotic Resistance and the importance of proper antibiotic use. The goal of this project is to help students understand how antibiotics work and why they are essential in treating bacterial infections and protecting public health.

Gram Staining in Bacteria

Gram staining is a fundamental microbiology technique used to differentiate bacteria based on their cell wall structure, separating them into Gram‑positive organisms that retain the crystal violet stain and appear purple, and Gram‑negative organisms that lose the primary stain during decolorization and take up the pink safranin counterstain. Through a four‑step process—crystal violet, iodine, alcohol decolorization, and safranin—this method highlights key structural differences such as peptidoglycan thickness and the presence of an outer membrane, which also relate to patterns of antibiotic resistance. By enabling rapid preliminary identification of bacterial types, Gram staining plays a crucial role in diagnosing infections and guiding effective treatment decisions in clinical and laboratory settings.

My piece Queen’s Court, depicts a high standard woman searching for a man that fits her standards. In my piece, the jester dancing with worrisome expression is the man trying to impress the queen but she shows an unsatisfactory expression. When creating the queen, I drawn some inspiration from a tarot card called the nine of pentacles which represents a high valued woman that is wealthy that is happy and satisfied with what she worked hard for. In my piece I created the queen with long flowy hair covering her in intimate parts instead of painting her with clothing because the long wild hair wrapping around her body represents her freedom and her control within her decisions in life.

Now for the jesters, within the piece I created the jesters to represent men try to impress women and putting up a show in a mask to hide away their true selves. Little bit more deep on the main jester, I created him with a red skin tight suit because the color red represents intensity, intimacy, and wrath. I also change a few things within his anatomy by corrupting and reshaping his body structure to represent the man behind the jester, hiding his insecurities, such as his rather long left arm and short right arm. On the right side of the Queen’s throne there’s plenty of jester masks to show us the audience that there was previous men to fail the queens judgment. That’s my Queen’s Court.

Lyrical Music's Effect on Working Memory

My project is an academic research poster in which my assistant, Lizbet, and I tested the hypothesis that students listening to music with lyrics, while performing a memory game, will make more mistakes than students listening to music without lyrics. The primary Guiding Principle expressed within this project is in the application and creation of knowledge. This principle is demonstrated throughout the course of designing and conducting my research project and subsequent creation of my research poster, which is an overarching view of what I learned in my research methods class with Professor Dawn Whinnery. Having the opportunity to apply class knowledge, I learned how to conduct an ethical experiment, design my own research project, collect data, and analyze the results to make conclusions about my hypothesis.

Two additional principles reflected within my research project are collaboration and analytical reasoning. Throughout the course of conducting my research, Lizbet and I worked closely together to ensure the experiment ran smoothly, we communicated effectively with participants, and adapted quickly when clarification of adjustments was needed. Analytical reasoning had been an essential part in interpreting our findings and evaluating whether my hypothesis was supported. As a result of this project, I discovered that lyrical music may have a positive effect on visual working memory, which was interestingly contrary to my hypothesis. Over the course of conducting research and creating my research poster, I developed new skills in data collection and analysis, and gained better practice in communicating with new people more effectively and professionally. Even after completing this project, I am still curious about how different genres and aspects of music affect memory in an academic setting. Although my research focused on one aspect of studying, being visual working memory, we had not explored other aspects, such as reading comprehension, which would be the next step for future continued research.

Culmination of my Academic Artistic Journey

My presentation will consist of several acrylic paintings created in my 2025 fall semester Painting 1 class, as well as a few graphic images created during both my current spring Graphic Communication II class and my previous fall 2025 Graphic Communication class. Additionally, I will be re-presenting some of my best pieces of artwork from my spring 2025 Drawing 101 class. If possible, I would also like to show off some of my work from my 2025 spring Animation 101 class. If no other options are available, I can display any animations I have prepared on my laptop which I can set up on a table. All these projects demonstrate my continued journey in learning and understanding the guiding principle of Aesthetics and Creative Thinking. For my paintings, I explore concepts such as value, color theory, and put a creative expressionist twist on still-life. For my Graphic Communication projects, I showcase type figures and the principles of type function which apply to combining text and imagery in a way that's both pleasing and engaging to look at. My artwork from Drawing 101 shows off several elements and principles of visual art which I've learned and which explore the use of visual concepts such as line, space, shape, pattern, balance, rhythm, scale, proportion, etc. Finally, any animations I am able to display will be a creative exploration of the history of animation from the thaumatrope, to stop-motion, to frame-by-frame animation.

Many of these projects are also a testament to the guiding principle of Collaboration and Inclusion as most were brainstormed in the early stages with a group of peers providing feedback. One of my paintings in particular may also be considered to represent the Application and Creation of Knowledge as I experimented with different ways of using paint to express the mood and atmosphere I was going for in ways my instructor had not taught me. Every one of these projects represents a step in my creative journey, from learning the language of vision in Drawing 101, to utilizing the principles of animation in Animation 101, to exploring type functions in Graphic Communication, to experimenting with art techniques in Painting 1. Knowing there is always still more to learn beyond what I've already gained motivates and drives me toward learning new skills and exploring mediums and techniques I've only dabbled in when it comes to art. I'd love to further explore different art movements in painting such as surrealism and impressionism, and I like to learn more techniques for creating more fluid animation. The potential for creativity is endless, and that is why I love graphic art so much.

Mothers Embrace

This is my painting, a copy of Madonna of the Book by Sandro Botticelli. I created it for an assignment in my class, but I chose this piece because I genuinely loved it, its beauty really captured my attention. This was for an assignment, I had to recreate the image in black and white, which changed the way I approached it. Without color, I had to rely on mixing of the shades black and white, contrast, and fine details to bring the image to life. This piece really forced me to focus closely on the light and dark areas, especially in the faces and the folds of the clothing. Even though it was challenging at times, it helped me improve my attention to detail and gave me a better understanding of the original piece, and the technique used.

"Before I Fell in Love"

My project for the Student Showcase is a song I wrote called “Before I Fell in Love.” I typically perform this by singing and playing guitar. The Guiding Principle this project expresses is Aesthetics & Creative Thinking. Writing a song allowed me to creatively use music as an artistic expression. The other Principle I expressed in this project was Ethical Growth & Wellness. I used this song to describe specific emotions. The fluctuations in the song’s tempo symbolize internal conflict experienced throughout the song’s storyline, and I used my song as an outlet for that. After writing this project, I learned that even things as small as adjusting a song’s tempo can symbolize a shift in emotions. When suddenly increasing speed, I aimed to show a sudden wave of internal conflict. When slowing down, I wanted to show a sense of resolution and closure. With this song, I learned that you can express emotions in ways that go beyond lyrics. Adjusting musical elements of a piece can showcase emotions too. One thing I’m curious about is exploring how I can really play into this when I produce this song later on. When I add more to the song besides vocals and guitar, I can use different layers to add texture to the song as well.

My project, “Escaleras…” (Stairs…), is a series of 7 paintings created with acrylic and watercolor that seeks to represent the rhythm of life and the different paths each person follows. These paths can be challenging, exhausting, and overwhelming, but they also show that they are worth walking, not because of the beginning or the end, but because of what happens along the way. Additionally, this project explores the weight of time, as every person has their own pace. However, we often forget this and, instead of embracing it, we perceive time as pressure or competition. My project is primarily guided by the principle of Aesthetics & Creative Thinking, as I use art to express an internal reflection on life, time, our connections, and our individual paths. Through a visual, emotional, and cinematic language, I aim to portray how life can feel heavy and how routine can slowly dim our inner spark.

This is represented through moments of emotional lows, where the path fractures and turns into a fall into the void. However, this process also carries contrast. In life, we are not alone, even if it sometimes feels that way. The connections we form with others along our journey are deeply valuable. Even when our “stairs” lead us in different directions, we often find ourselves crossing paths again, especially when we need it the most. While it is possible to rise from our own abyss on our own, having the support of others can make that process gentler. It also helps us recognize that it is the small moments and details along the way that make even the hardest climb worthwhile. Eventually, separation becomes natural and inevitable. It is part of life’s paths, of each person’s timing, and of the choices we make. Even so, knowing that our connections continue moving forward gives us a sense of peace and energy to accept change. Over time, and through self-reflection, we can continue our path with greater clarity, learning to integrate time into our lives instead of feeling it against us.

In this way, we move forward with hope, without losing sight of the small beauties that make each moment meaningful. Additionally, this project is also connected to the principle of Analytical Reasoning & Metacognition, as it reflects a deep exploration of emotions and internal processes. This project was born during a moment in which I felt vulnerable and emotionally drained, similar to what is represented in the first painting. During an ordinary moment in my daily life, I became lost in my thoughts, having an internal conversation with myself, and I visualized this entire sequence as an animated scene. That experience allowed me to find peace at a moment when I needed it the most. Likewise, the project connects with Ethical Growth & Wellness, as it promotes healing, acceptance, and personal growth. It does not seek to judge emotions such as exhaustion or falling, but instead encourages self-compassion. I believe this is essential for understanding ourselves and learning to value our own journey. My main intention in creating this project is to offer a warm embrace to anyone who has ever felt something similar.

This vision helped me rise from my own abyss, with the support of people who are important to me, even if they are not aware of it, as my processes tend to be internal. Still, I hope this piece can accompany someone else in their own journey. In any case, I send a warm embrace to every person who encounters my work. Through this process, I discovered within myself a fear that has held me back from sharing my ideas and emotions. I am currently working on overcoming it, and this event represents an important opportunity for me. I have always enjoyed creating stories, drawings, and worlds where I can explore the questions that arise in my mind, without the pressure of needing everything to be realistic. However, I had never dared to share them beyond my close circle. Now, I want to change that, with the hope that someone else might relate to it or reflect on something they had forgotten. Finally, I also learned something important about myself: I do not see life as simply a beginning and an end, but as a continuous flow. Everything keeps moving forward, even when we cannot see it. I have always been curious about what happens before a story begins and after it ends, as well as the parallel stories of those surrounding the main characters. Now that I can recognize this clearly, I want to use it to continue growing and understanding myself more deeply.

Aviation in Agriculture: A Shift in the Southwest

My capstone project, titled “Aviation in Agriculture: A Shift in the Southwest” examines how aerial agriculture practices in Yuma have changed over the past 20–30 years. The project focuses on the transition from traditional crop dusting using manned aircraft to the increasing use of drone technology. It compares these two approaches in terms of cost, efficiency, safety, and environmental impact, while also exploring the factors driving this shift. To conduct this research, I used a combination of interviews with a range of individuals including but not limited to farmers, crop duster pilots, drone operators, and agricultural technology specialists, along with analysis of agricultural data and reports. The primary Guiding Principle expressed in this project is Analytical Reasoning & Metacognition. This principle is demonstrated through my comparison of two different agricultural systems and my evaluation of multiple variables, including economic costs, operational efficiency, worker safety, and environmental effects.

I analyzed both qualitative data from interviews and quantitative data from agricultural sources to better understand not only how aerial agriculture has changed, but why this transition is occurring. In addition, my project reflects Application & Creation of Knowledge, as I applied real-world data and firsthand perspectives to develop my own conclusions about the future of agricultural technology in Yuma. It also touches on Collaboration & Inclusion through the incorporation of diverse viewpoints from individuals with different roles and experiences in the agricultural industry. Through this project, I discovered that drone technology is becoming increasingly important in agriculture due its advantages such as its precision, lower operational costs, and improved safety compared to traditional crop dusting. I also learned that, as of now, aerial agriculture is likely to remain a hybrid system, where drones and traditional aircraft continue to work together rather than one fully replacing the other.

Technology in this field not only helps solve existing challenges but also creates new solutions that allow agriculture to keep up with increasing demand for efficiency and productivity. This project deepened my understanding of how technological change happens over time, showing that innovation involves both advantages and limitations as industries adapt. I am also grateful to have had the opportunity to become more educated in agriculture, which is such a huge and essential part of our Yuma community. Even after completing this project, I am still curious about how drone technology will continue to develop, how regulations will evolve, and how future environmental and economic pressures will shape aerial agriculture.

In ‘She’s A Queen.’ I explore the polar opposites of being super masculine and feminine. The struggle that is choosing to wake up in the morning, dress in a suit, brush my hair into a proper sidepart and complete all of the other duties that include “being a man”. On the other hand, I explore the violence and outward tension that comes from living authentically when that means dressing in a tutu, bright pink wig and purple lipstick instead. In this project, I targeted the guiding principle of ‘Aesthetics and Creative Thinking.’ I was able to do so by selectively choosing to film scenes using both the wide angle & telephoto focal lengths to incur different visual effects. The wide angle length for all-inclusive shots that showed both my entire outfit and the environment that surrounded me. The telephoto lens to showcase instimate moments of mental processes my characters were going through at the time.

I also used filters on my clips to different between the scenes of the masculine character and the feminine character. The masculine character was portrayed in a dark, underexposed blue tint that was very drab, depressing and boring. The feminine character not only sported a bright pink wig and drank a vibrant drink at the coffee shop, she was also seen through a hot pink, slightly over saturated filter that emphasized the magenta in her hair. It almost showed how she viewed the world through a pair of rose colored glasses, no matter how much hurt others caused her for being authentically herself. Dressing up in the two characters for this project showed me a lot about societal behavior. I got a few weird stares from people who were quite possibly baffled by me dressed up in a big tutu and a bright pink wig.

What I realized in those moments, however, was that I was actually that much more courageous than those people judging me because I actually made the bold choice to go dressed up with vibrant, fun clothes in public whereas these people who gave me weird looks would never do so. It said more about them & their own limitations on their self-expression. It echoed to me the fact that authentic expression cannot be accepted by people who have yet to or will never authentically accept themselves and embraced every weird, intimate, secret and dark part of their selves. I’m curious what a life would be like living more authentically. Me dressing up in more feminine outfits. How my relationship to the world would falter or grow if I was more authentic?

To Be or Not To Be.

In ‘To Be or Not to Be’ I explore the polarity between one’s identity. How quickly one can decide to become more feminine by the simple application of lipstick, a wig, a boa and fluffy clothes. Then, become more masculine by the removal of all these things and dressing up in a tux, a side part, glasses and a burning cigarette. The choice we make everyday to dress ourselves and choose our identity. How much choice we have in that by the simple actions we take in our dressing. The Yin and Yang that is the range of possibilities not only in our wardrobe but in who we can become as well. The polarity of who we are as humans. Mad, angry, resentful, yet also grateful, caring and compassionate.

The radical acceptance of all that we are in oneself. This project was also heavily inspired by the great photographer Cindy Sherman herself. My project falls under the ‘Aesthetics and Creative Thinking’ guiding principle. In my photo of me in a tuxedo, I chose a very distinctive masculine outfit common to Wall Street marketers who spend all day stressing and overworking their hearts on the matters of global economics. I even topped it off with a self-soothing cigarette. The epitome of a hard-working man. I set my camera’s white balance to ‘White Fluorescent’ to give my picture a depressing blue look. Alternatively, in my photo of me in a pink wig, I chose a very feminine outfit including a puffy pink tutu, luxurious coat, lilac boa, deep purple lipstick and neon pink wig. Through designing a specific costume I was able to get into the role of a funky and fierceless woman.

Ready to defend herself on the road across America’s ghost towns I also edited this picture in Lightroom Classic by raising its magenta color value, adding warmth to the white balance and increasing the saturation heavily. The end result were two polar opposite worlds with opposite protagonists. This to emphasize the liberty we as humans hold to travel between different levels of self expression. I learned how fun and creative it is to choose a specific location for its aesthetic appeal, design a costume and select props that fit into a vision and act in a clear role that you can get lost in. The joy that is losing yourself in a character and embodying emotions and desires of a different character is probably incomparable to anything other than acting. After completing this project, I’m still curious about what other editing tools and softwares I can employ to really fine-tune a picture to describe the vision I have in my head. I’m curious about where else I could travel with editing. I’m also insanely curious about what other characters I could spur up and what parts of myself they’d represent. What undiscovered or overlooked part of me prefers to come out on screen, and later in therapy.

For the project, I am presenting two posters, both of which explain summer wear and precautions that can help you through the hotter season of the year. Both posters support family and pets; the posters describe the importance of preventing skin cancer by choosing the correct color, skin care, and fabrics during the summer. One of the posters helping animals loves to protect their pets from the summer weather that can cause many possible illnesses and other health issues, leading to a reason to see the vet in the coming summer. Including the rate of mangos eaten and not using the seed to grow new mangos, and other things to have before entering your car. The second poster describes things to know before owning a pet and leading a vet tech career, helping other owners to understand their furry companions' body language and how they react to different situations. This Guide Principle expressed in this project is Application & Creation Knowledge. These principles can be expressed in Ethical Growth and Wellness. Both posters fit in with this principle, supporting first-time pet owners to prevent illness and signs of injuries that can later occur in the future, and supporting others to prepare for summer's effect on skin and plant growth development. Studying vet tech during this project, I have learned to be more aware during the summer to look out for family, friends, and pets' health. I discovered how to grow your own mangos at home, and reusing clothes to prevent skin cancer. Additionally, I learned more about animals to help owners understand how to keep their pet companies to have long, healthy lives. I wonder if this project could help other people prepare for the summer.

Come meet the Game Dev who just started her journey 3 weeks ago and witness the flight mechanics take you to new heights in a small demo trailer showcasing the art of storytelling and knowledge of animation/modeling techniques in blender. You will have behind the scenes footage of the code that goes into the gameplay mechanics so far demonstrating my knowledge of blueprints and c++ in unreal engine. My project is an exploratory take on Game/Animation Design and everything that goes into it

Propeller takes you to new heights both figuratively and metaphorically in the creative aesthetic of game design and the practical application of the many mechanics that go into in game Movement and ui. Using a dialogue system containing art I create I am allowed further freedom into how I design my games style, same with blender and nomad sculpt with all of my assets. The principles of animation will be explored in this projects minor gameplay trailer. Seeing as I only started this project 3 weeks ago and wish for funding to continue to be able to make my game as big as I want in an alotted amount of time id say I still wish to learn a great deal

No one ever stops learning. There is always room to learn something, even if it’s a new skill or explore new ideas. Thats the foundation of my project, being the application of the recent knowledge I have cumulatived in my spring semester in my 3d animation class with professor Whinnery, As I have never animated before let alone did touched anything 3d. So safe to say this was a new experience that was very humbling. As I mostly draw traditionally and sometimes digitally so being thrown into something like this it was like relearning everything from the very beginning. But even so- I learnt a lot- not just how to navigate the program, but the understanding of 3d shapes, environments, lighting, and etc. that overall helped me develop ways to grow my own 2d art and taking it to the next level. So I tried to show at least in this project some things I learned and have come to appreciate in my 3D animation class. 3d modeling, liquid simulations, camera movement, lighting, texturing and etc!

A Party Through Time

My project is a photographic series in which I portray a 1920s flapper dancer in the heart of downtown Yuma. The images blend vintage fashion and energy with the city’s modern architecture, creating a visual dialogue between past and present. It’s both a creative homage to Yuma’s evolving history and a personal exploration of artistic growth. The primary guiding principle expressed was the celebration of art and innovation. By merging the historical elements of lapper culture and early 20th century style with the vibrancy of present-day Yuma. By juxtaposing vintage costume and dance-inspired poses against contemporary urban scenery, the work honors the city’s historical roots while also celebrating its progress and modern identity.

This fusion reflects how creativity can keep heritage alive through reinvention. Additional principles expressed were creativity, and individual expression. While the subject of the photo is undoubtedly me, it is not my identity but the identity of a bubbly 1920s flapper dancer. My personal artistic vision is captured as I challenged my own creativity while incorporating Downtown Yuma as a reflection of our local culture. Through this project, I learned the power of storytelling through self-portrayal and setting. I gained a deeper appreciation for how history and place can shape creative identity, and I strengthened my technical skills in conceptual photography, composition, and direction. I’m eager to continue exploring how visual art can bridge different time periods and cultural narratives. I want to experiment further with blending performance art and photography to see how different eras, themes, and styles can reflect life in the digital modern age, where emotion and heart is essential to creating meaningful art.

Does Peer Pressure Affect Decision Making Confidence?

My project explores the question of whether peer pressure really does affect students decision making during tests. I examine how students could change their choices in the presence of a classmate. The primary Guiding Principle expressed in my project is Analytical Reasoning & Metacognition. This is because I was able to not only gather and evaluate information but also reflect on how individuals think, make choices and react to others. I learned how peer pressure can be both positive and negative, effecting their score for the better or for the worst.

My project could also connect to Collaboration and inclusion since students have to interact with my confederates. Conformity theory suggests that people have a need to belong with a group and by changing their answers, they are proving this theory. Throughout this project, I discovered that there is no statistical relation between peer pressure and decision making but 90% of my subjects did change their answers one or more times. I still wonder if these would be the same results if my confederates were friends of that person rather than a stranger. Would they be more likely to change their answer or not?

Agricultural Learning in a New-Light

An introspective analysis of my time learning the practice of agricultural research and collegiate-based learning models, developing the next generation of agricultural leaders. My time learning plant cultivation techniques through crop experimentation led me to understand how programs like Arizona Western College's Agricultural Mentorship Academy and the College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences foster the guided principles of Analytical Reasoning and Metacognition through their “boots-on-the-ground” approach to learning. Dr. Ali Mohammed’s approach to teaching was to coach on the protocol for setting up the field trial layout, applying the treatment, collecting the data, and troubleshooting system malfunctions as they arose. With my mentor’s trust and the routine exercise of the role as a Plant Research Technician, the facet of conducting the role leads to self-exploration of methodology.

While staking and flagging rows of differentiated treatment sections of the field containing components that would alter the moisture retention of the soil (like polysorb), the nitrogen availability for plant use (through the use of conventional or organic fertilizers), along with a scattering of subsurface placement of drip take lines emitting a varied amount of water in gallons per hour ( dispersed in amounts of 50%, 75%, and 100% irrigation amounts). Targeted testing sites were selected to assess the plant’s growth performance through phenotyping. Additional principles in Ethical Growth and Wellness are the overall goals when researching alternative means to use fewer resources while producing the most yield per acre-foot in a sustainable system of operation that will not permanently alter the natural environment. In assessing my understanding of how to conduct agricultural research, I adapted a pattern of learning that allowed me to pick up new information through problem-solving. In practice, this method was adaptive, allowing me to recognize my failures and try again.

I want to perform some poems that I wrote about my experiences that I have had. I wrote these when I was feeling down or felt motivated and wanted to let out what I was feeling. The two poems that stand out more and have a deeper meaning to me is called "When?" And "First choice". The poem "When?" Is about how I don't recognize myself after getting depression and how much I have changed. "First choice" is about how I am never really the first person that someone would think about or want. This is Aesthetics & Creative Thinking because I showed my awareness of what I went through and my thoughts through art. I used writing as a way to express how I was feeling. I learned that after writing poems, I have a better understanding of my feelings and how helpful writing about it has been

Little Minds, Big Ideas

My project best connects with the Guiding Principle of Aesthetics & Creative Thinking. It shows a child reading while their imagination seems to come to life around them, which represents the idea that learning is not always limited to what is on the page. I wanted to show that reading can open the door to curiosity, creativity, and new ways of seeing the world. Instead of only focusing on the act of reading itself, I focused more on what happens in a child’s mind while they are learning. This project reflects my understanding that creativity is an important part of education, especially for young children, because it helps make learning more meaningful, exciting, and personal.

This project also connects to Application & Creation of Knowledge because it shows that children do not just take in information, they build their own understanding through imagination. Working with young children has helped me notice how often they learn by making connections, asking questions, and turning simple things into something bigger in their minds. Through this project, I discovered that creative expression can communicate ideas about learning in a way that words sometimes cannot. It also made me think more deeply about how important it is for teachers to encourage imagination in the classroom. Even after finishing this project, I am still curious about how different children experience learning in their own unique way and how creativity shapes their growth over time.

The painting I am going to submit is based off of my experiences being in and out of hospitals from the ages of 14 to 19. I had and still have many health issues and couldn’t find a way to express them until I began painting. Precision in Perspective: A Multidisciplinary Odyssey Through AutoCAD

My showcase project is a comprehensive portfolio developed during my introductory AutoCAD course, featuring a diverse array of technical drawings that bridge the gap between abstract geometry and industrial application. The collection includes architectural floorplans, electrical circuits, and mechanical components such as cranes and purifier schemes, alongside textured geometric arrays representing various materials. The primary Guiding Principle exemplified in this work is Application and Creation of Knowledge. This principle is expressed through the transition from mastering basic software commands to independently synthesizing those tools to create complex, multi-layered designs.

By applying mathematical coordinates and drafting standards to real-world contexts—such as labeling a functional house plan or detailing a mechanical part list—I transformed theoretical classroom concepts into innovative digital prototypes that reflect professional industry standards. Furthermore, the portfolio expresses the principle of Aesthetics and Creative Thinking through the intentional use of textures, such as metallic finishes on geometric shapes, and the balanced layout of architectural elements. This creative exploration allowed me to see drafting not just as a technical requirement, but as a form of visual communication where imagination meets structural reality. Through this process, I discovered the vital importance of precision and organization; I learned that a successful design relies as much on "behind-the-scenes" data, like material lists and scale, as it does on the final visual output. Despite the depth of this portfolio, I remain curious about the future of integrated design—specifically, how these 2D and 3D foundations can be leveraged within Building Information Modeling (BIM) to create more sustainable and energy-efficient architectural structures.

This project demonstrates how music has a profound impact on your life. Music becomes a refuge when you can't find your comfort zone, allowing you to disconnect and find calm in any situation. Through each song, you can feel accompanied, recall special moments, and create a space where you can be yourself without worries. Furthermore, music is incredibly helpful when you're stressed, as it has the ability to shift your mood quickly. Scientifically, listening to music has been shown to reduce anxiety and relax the body, without much research. Its impact is so powerful that it can transform negative emotions into tranquility and motivation.

My Beloved Cat

My project, which includes two paintings of cats, represents the Guiding Principle of Aesthetics and Creative Thinking because I focused on using imagination, visual storytelling, and artistic choices to create something meaningful and expressive. In my first painting, one cat is a King Orange Cat, dressed in a medieval style red coat with black dots and white fur, staring directly at the viewer. This shows creativity because I combined a real animal with a historical/ royal theme to give it a personality and symbolism. Some people might feel a sense of pressure or intensity, like how someone might feel if a king were staring at them, while others might see the cat as stoic.

In the second painting, a tuxedo cat is surrounded by roses, red flowers, plants, and soft curtains. I used these details to create a calm, elegant, atmosphere that both contrasts with and slightly connects to the King Orange Cat. Through color choices like red, black and warm tones, I tried to guide the viewer's emotions and make the scene visually interesting. This project also reflects creative thinking because I made intentional decisions about composition, contrast, and mood instead of just copying something realistic. I thought about how each element, like the clothing, the flowers, and the setting, could tell a story or represent different ideas, such as power versus peace or fantasy versus everyday life. While Aesthetics and Creative Thinking is the main principle, my work also connects to Application and Creation of Knowledge because I applied what I have learned about art techniques like shading, color balance, and perspective. Overall, these paintings show how I can use creativity to turn simple ideas into something more imaginative and expressive.

I believe that this project portrays what I have learned during all my time studying here at AWC. Tatami Records is an online business where I mostly sell music records (CDs, vinyls, etc.) that I recently started last December. But what does Tatami have to do with AWC? Right now my degree is AAS in Computer Graphics, I have been learning how to use many tools which I can implement into my project. For example, most of the work that you see was made by me using Adobe Illustrator — the logo, the whole aesthetic of my business, flyers I have made through the months, and more! Also, I have received a lot of support from my professors and classmates who believe in what I do and encourage me to go even further. I believe that my business would not exist without the support of my school, which is something that I am going to appreciate always.
