AWC’s Annual La Cosecha to Celebrate Education Major Graduates on May 4

May 1, 2017

Arizona Western College is pleased to invite the media to the Annual La Cosecha (The Harvest) Outstanding Graduates Banquet on Thursday, May 4th  in the Schoening Conference Center, located within the College Community Center (3C), on the Yuma Campus. Registration begins at 6:00 pm and the program starts at 6:30 pm.

La Cosecha is returning to their original objective and mission and is focusing their attention on Education majors and that of growing their own future teachers (elementary, secondary or college professors).  The La Cosecha Banquet will be a celebration of Education majors and teachers.

The intent is to encourage and support students to continue their education and return to Yuma to serve as teachers and/or professors here at home. During this banquet, graduates will be celebrated and recognized for their achievements in the presence of family, college officials, staff and community guests.

Scholarships will be awarded at the banquet. The donors, most of whom are AWC graduates, will be thanked as many have been contributing for many years. One such AWC graduate/donor is Yuma attorney Candy Camarena, who started and has paid for the banquet portion of the event for the past 18 years with the intent of providing graduates with an experience they will encounter in their professional lives.

Yuma County has one of the highest needs for teachers in the state and country and local school districts are struggling to find and keep qualified teachers here in Yuma.  Therefore, La Cosecha would like to work in partnership with local school districts, NAU-Yuma and the new ASU-Yuma education programs and create a more purposeful program that would identify students early (during our DISCOVER new student orientation times), track and mentor these student throughout their experience here at AWC and then assist them with going on to a university, with hopes of their return to Yuma and becoming much needed teachers or professors.
