Two high-achieving students have been selected to represent Arizona Western College on the 2017 All-Arizona/All-USA Academic Team. The honor is designed to recognize two-year college students from across the USA who display an outstanding combination of academic achievement and leadership skills. This year, AWC has selected Osvaldo Villa and Tuan Nguyen for this honor.  They will be recognized at a luncheon on March 9, 2017 at the Hilton Phoenix/Mesa.

By being nominated, both students are automatically placed on the All-Arizona Academic Team, which awards them with four semesters of tuition waivers to any one of the three Arizona public universities. All-State Academic Team members are ranked in three tiers: gold, silver, and bronze medal levels. Gold medal nominees proceed to the national level to compete for Coca Cola Scholarships and the prestigious All-USA Academic Team.

Osvaldo Villa has a 4.0 GPA and is majoring in Molecular and Cellular Biology.

He plans to transfer to the University of Arizona to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cellular biology and participate in immunological medical research with the hopes of finding cures to infectious diseases.

Mr. Villa’s college and community activities include: Supplementary Instruction Leader, Student Success Center Math Tutor, and Treasurer of Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society / Sigma Beta Chapter.  College honors include: AWC Honors Scholarship, Dean’s List 2014-2016, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Honors Seminar. A quote he finds memorable is from Arnold Schwarzenegger: “You can't climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pockets.”

Tuan Nguyen has a 4.0 GPA and is majoring in Business Management. He plans to transfer to Arizona State University to earn a bachelor’s degree in Management.

Looking forward to the future, Tuan aspires to build his own business.

Mr. Nguyen’s college and community activities include: Former President of International Club, Former President of Business Club, AVID Tutor, and Math Tutor.

College Honors include: AWC Honors Scholarship, Student Showcase Scholarship, and Star Tutor award. He wrote his own personal quote: “Dare to fly towards the Sun. Even your wings may sink deep in the sea, your heart once rides high in the sky.”

Phi Theta Kappa, two-year college presidents, and community college state associations co-sponsor All-State Academic Team recognition programs in 32 states, of which Arizona is one. Each two-year college in Arizona may nominate two students per campus to the All-USA Academic Team. Students from Arizona nominated to the national team comprise the All-Arizona Academic Team. Nominations are based on outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community. All-Arizona Team members receive special recognition including medallions, certificates, and often stipends and tuition waivers to the Arizona state institution of their choice.
