AWC Community Band to present Spring Concert

Guest artist Mark Nelson to be featured, host public clinic

Yuma, AZ (March 7, 2022) – The Arizona Western College Community Band will be presenting its first concert of the spring semester on Monday, March 14.

A variety of musical styles will be performed during the event, which will be held at 7 p.m. in the Schoening Conference Center in the 3C Building at the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E. The guest artist for the performance will be Mark Nelson, a retired instructor of tuba and director of bands at Pima Community College.

Prior to the concert, Nelson will lead a clinic from 4 to 5 p.m. in Room MU 102 at the AWC Music Building. The master class will include performances, demonstrations, and coaching student musicians.

Both the concert and the clinic are free and open to the public.

Nelson has taught and performed for 39 years in public schools, colleges, universities, and orchestras in Vermont, Illinois, and Arizona. On the faculty at Pima College in Tucson from 2000 until his retirement in 2021, Nelson was the instructor of tuba, founder of the Electronic Music Laboratory, Director of Bands, head of the Department of Performing Arts, and later, the Acting Dean of Arts and Humanities. He has a distinguished career as a soloist and as a performer in orchestras and brass quintets. His accomplishments as an educator include stints as an orchestra director and instructor of strings.
