Karen Preston first in Arizona to complete new Child Development Associate Credential

Yuma, AZ (September 19, 2023) – As a high school student at Central Union High School in El Centro, Calif., Karen Preston spent the first two hours of her school day working at a childcare facility housed on campus.

It was that experience that sparked her interest in pursuing a potential career in early childhood education, and it’s a field she’s devoted herself to throughout her life.

Early childhood classroom serves as learning lab for teachers of students with special needs

Yuma, AZ (March 27, 2019) – A new early childhood classroom where early childhood educators in Yuma County can learn to work with young children with special needs recently opened on the Arizona Western College campus.

First Things First, Yuma School District One, and Arizona Western College have partnered to open an inclusion classroom in the College’s Child Development Learning Lab. The early childhood classroom, which includes 10 students with special needs and 10 typical students, provides additional learning to preschool-aged children in Yuma County.

AWC Child Development Learning Lab’s Annual Holiday Program

Yuma, AZ (December 7 , 2017)--The Dr. Kathryn A. Watson Child Development Learning Laboratory (CDLL) at Arizona Western College will be having their Annual Holiday Program for the CDLL children and their families on Tuesday, December 19 at 4:00 pm. 

Children will wear their Sunday best and perform for their family. They will also prepare to welcome Santa Clause, who will stop by and hand each child a gift. Children and their families will end the evening decorating holiday cookies and enjoying them with a warm cup of hot chocolate.

AWC CDLL Renews National NAEYC Accreditation

Arizona Western College’s Dr. Kathryn A. Watson Child Development Learning Laboratory (CDLL) has successfully renewed their accreditation for another year through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

“Accreditation is a mark of high-quality in all aspects of our program,” said CDLL Director Alma Barrandey. “Every decision that is made in our center is made with our accreditation in mind. From the materials that are purchased, curriculum that is taught, trainings for our teachers and administration decisions on who to hire for our program.”

Child Development Learning Lab Scholastic Book Fair from Oct 9 to Oct 13

The Dr. Kathryn A. Watson Child Development Learning Lab (CDLL) at Arizona Western College will be hosting their annual Scholastic Book Fair from Monday, October 9 to Friday, October 13.  All book sales benefit the CDLL.  They will earn Scholastic Dollars from the sale that can be put towards items for the center.

Everyone is welcome to stop by and purchase the books at the CDLL all week from 6:30am-5:30pm.  There will be books onsite or they can be ordered online at www.scholastic.com/bf/arizonawesterncollege.
