AWC art student places first in local art, poetry contest

Yuma, AZ (April 15, 2019) – The City of San Luis hosted the Harvesting Hope Art and Poetry Contest that concluded on March 23, 2019. AWC student, Jose Fimbres, took home first place in the college/university category for his portrait of Cesar Chavez. Jose is an art major and a member of the Art Curiosity and Secrets Art Club at AWC’s San Luis Learning Center.

Call for submissions to begin in August for 2018 exhibit

Yuma, AZ (May 29, 2018) – Yuma County received a national achievement award for the Hispanic Heritage Art Exhibition “Origins” put on by the San Luis Library and Arizona Western College San Luis Learning Center. The exhibit is held annually at the San Luis Library in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) recognized Yuma County with the award, which honors innovative, effective county government programs that enhance services for residents.

The AWC family would like to send a Congratulations and Felicidades to Everardo Martinez, who served as our Associate Dean for South Yuma County. Everardo leaves AWC to become Dean of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Imperial Valley College. Everardo served AWC students for nearly 14 years as a tireless advocate for South County, and as an adjunct Professor of World Art.

AWC student Sydney Arriga of San Luis, AZ, is heading to Oxford University this summer, to study during the month of July.

Arriaga earned scholarship support through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which awarded her $4,500. The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, which sponsors the Gilman Scholarship, reviewed reviewed nearly 650 applications for over 250 awards. 

In addition, Arriga received a $3,000 scholarship from the AWC Foundation to cover additional tuition and program fees.
