Yuma, AZ (November 28, 2018)Rebekah Eaves is hanging up her Matador jersey as she moves on from the Arizona Western College Volleyball team to become a Statesmen at William Penn University.

Eaves, a sophomore defensive specialist, signed her National Letter of Intent with William Penn during a signing ceremony at AWC on Wednesday, Nov. 28.

After coming to Yuma from Farmington, New Mexico as a walk on, Eaves earned a scholarship as a sophomore, allowing her to earn an associate degree in Elementary Education.

“Bekah has a special place in my heart. She shares a hometown with one of my best friends that I actually played college volleyball with. Bekah has done a tremendous job for us. William Penn is gaining an exceptional athlete. She will truly be missed,” said AWC Head Volleyball Coach Lorayne Chandler.

Eaves said her experience at AWC has helped prepare her for what’s next.

“These last two years have taught me how to play competitive college volleyball. I have gained a lot from the AWC program. I was able to meet a great group of girls here from all over. I have met my best friends here and I would not change it for the world. I learned how to stay disciplined on and off the court. Coach Chandler always focused on serve receive allowing me to work on my platform,” said Eaves.

“I am really excited to play for the William Penn volleyball program. I cannot wait to travel across the United States to Oskaloosa, Iowa to be able to experience new things and meet new people. It is such a special opportunity to play volleyball for two more years at a university.”

During her volleyball career at AWC, Eaves was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-Academic 3rd Team in 2018, an achievement reserved only for students with a 3.6 to 3.79 GPA. In 2017, she had 159 digs as a freshman and led the team with 24 aces.

Most recently, Eaves helped the Lady Mats finish out a strong season (21-6) as Region I Champions.

Before starting at AWC, Eaves played volleyball at Piedra Vista High School. She was awarded for the most digs on the team in 2016 and named to the All-State team that year. She was also on the All-Academic 1st Team in high school all four years.
