Why did you decide to attend college? What are you wanting out of your education?
At first I wasn’t sure that I was going to college. You know, I was homeschooled before this and I was really nervous about going to college. I decided to go to college though because I love teaching my music students and did a lot of research and found the best way I could continue to do that would be if I obtained a college degree.
You were homeschooled until you graduated high school, right? How was the transition from homeschool to college?
It was really good. I’m glad I went to a community college first. I think at a university I would have been lost, but here, I found the KEYS program and they really helped me and I really enjoy it. They really help me, they’re a smaller group, so, I feel more secure.
Your sister is attending AWC at the same time. What’s that like?
My sister is attending the same classes as me—we have the exact same classes which I really enjoy because I have someone there to help me study and if I don’t understand something, she usually does, so that’s really helpful.
Do you have other family members who have attended AWC?
My brother, grandma, and mom all attended AWC, but, none of them have graduated, so, I’m a first-generation student.
Are you happy with your decision to stay close to home and attend AWC?
I am really happy with my decision to stay here. If I went to a university, I would have had to leave and leave my students and that would have been really sad for me. I really enjoy teaching them music and that’s one of the biggest reasons why I decided to stay here.
