Family is KEY

Jessie Peña

Why did you decide to attend college?

I decided to go to college because not only am I a first generation college student, but I saw it as an opportunity that neither of my parents had and also since both of my brothers were going to college, I wanted to go to college with them.

What are you currently studying?

I am currently studying Engineering and Computer Science and after I graduate from AWC I plan to transfer to UA – Yuma and pursue a degree in Systems Engineering.

What are your goals for the future?

I want to get my bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering and use that to become a Navy officer and get into the nuclear officer program.

Do you feel supported at AWC to reach that goal?

Yes I do. I feel supported by AWC faculty and staff and I can say that I have a second family in the KEYS Program. They have been supporting me since the beginning.

And what other clubs or programs are you involved in?

I am involved in Club SOTE and KSAC, which are clubs for KEYS students and first-gen students.

Is there anything you would want to say to someone who is trying to decide if college is right for them?

That’s a tough question. I would say that it’s not about how much money you want to earn from that program of study, it’s about bettering yourself as a person. I’m pursuing engineering so that I can become a Navy officer which has been my dream since I was young.
