3rd Annual First-Generation Student Celebration
3rd Annual First-Generation Celebration to be held Nov. 6
Event to feature speakers, resource fair, and film screening
Yuma, AZ (October 28, 2019) – With about 62% of the Arizona Western College population identifying as first-generation college goers, the campus aims to make resources and activities more accessible and approachable for students, especially those who may need additional support and guidance.
AWC will be holding their 3rd Annual First-Generation Celebration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, as part of a national effort to celebrate the contributions and successes of first-generation college students, staff, and faculty at institutions across the country.
In addition to having first-generation speakers and a proclamation read by AWC Vice President Bryan Doak, a variety of departments will be holding a resource fair at the event to share what tools are available for current and potential first-generation students as a way to help them navigate through academic and professional pathways.
A screening of the documentary “First Generation” will also be held during the event from 3pm - 5pm in the 3C Francis Morris Boardroom. The 2011 film follows four first-generation students across the country in their pursuit of higher education and looks at the challenges they face in earning college degrees.
The celebration is open to the community from Yuma and La Paz counties and will be held in the grassy area between the 3C and AS buildings on the AWC Yuma Campus, 2020 S. Ave. 8E. The First-Generation Celebration event will also be happening in conjunction with the AWC Foundation Chili Cook-Off, which will be taking place at the same time and location to raise funds for student scholarships.
