Creating a successful college experience is a complicated process. Studies show that students who engage consistently with academic advisors are more likely to succeed than students who self-advise. It is important for your success that you talk with academic advisors throughout your college career.
While you bear the ultimate responsibility for your educational plans and life goals, an academic advisor can help you identify and assess alternatives and consequences. An advisor can also serve as a source for accurate information about college policies, programs (majors), and resources, as well as career information.
Generally, you should meet with your advisor at least three times a semester. The first meeting is to get the semester started properly, the second meeting to make an educational plan and check progress, and the third meeting to plan next semester's courses and/or check progress toward graduation.
How do I get an Advisor?
Academic advising is done by faculty members in the various disciplines, and by academic counselors and advisors. If you are certain of your major, your division has a faculty advisor who will help you to graduation. Please find your major in the chart below and match it with your advisor's information or click here for a printable poster if you have declared a major.
With the help of an academic advisor you may:
- Be provided information regarding the nature and purpose of higher education
- Understand and utilize placement test results
- Receive an unofficial evaluation of transfer credits
- Define and refine educational goals and objectives, and understand the consequences of alternative courses of action
- Be encouraged to become an active participant in your educational planning and college life
- Become aware of transfer issues
- Make appropriate course, certificate, and degree selections
- Receive accurate verbal and written information on majors and program requirements
- Arizona Western College's academic counselors and advisors are trained to help you explore your academic and career goals.
