STUDENT INFORMATION

All new, degree seeking students, or those who wish to take a general education course, a math, English or ESL course must take a placement examination.

Why a test?

Placement testing is just one of the first steps to start on the road to academic success. Proper assessment leads to higher success in your academic courses.

  • STEP 1 Admission
  • STEP 2 Placement testing
  • STEP 3 Advising/Counseling
  • STEP 4 Registration

What type of test is required?

Accuplacer is the testing instrument used to place students in the appropriate classes. The subjects covered are: Reading, Sentence Skills, Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra and College-level Mathematics.

Test Locations

Placement tests are offered at any AWC testing site. Students interested in taking the full placement exam should allow approximately two hours of testing time.

What is the cost for this test?

The first placement test is provided at no cost to the student. Students who are not satisfied with their test results may re-test again after a 24-hour waiting period. Re-tests are assessed a $20.00 fee.

Students who are still not satisfied with the re-test scores may, after a 90-day waiting period, take the placement test again. There is no charge for the third examination.

How are scores computed?

Once the assessment is completed, students receive a printed report with the scores and course placement. Students then visit a counselor who will help them interpret the scores and select their courses.

All testers are required to present a valid and current picture identification card before testing.
