Spring 2013 - Educational Events Summary

Student Showcase - 4/30/13

AWC and NAU-Yuma students had the opportunity to present their outstanding work from across many disciplines. Some of the presentations included: Science Research experiments, Violence Prevention Research, Art Displays including Architecture and Clay & Pottery Throwing, Historical Presentations, Vocal and Dance Performances, and Poetry Readings. 

The Love Connection: Using Attachment Theory to Help Improve Relationships - 4/23/13

The presentation with Troy Love in coordination with the AWC Family Studies Program taught the audience about attachment theory and also helped each audience member better understand their own way of dealing with issues in relationships. Personal awareness of what aspect of the attachment theory each person turns to in a time of need helps us get to the heart of our emotional wounds and struggles to improve all relationships - romantic, social, and familial.

6th Annual Sustainability Fair - 4/11/13

This event helped to achieve the "Green Dream." We had many club and department booths in addition to community vendors who came to campus to promote a sustainable world for future generations. Highlights of the event included solar demonstrations, recycling information and demonstrations, hybrid vehicles, a recycled materials fashion show, a skateboarding demonstration, and much more. Many local children came to campus as well to learn more about simple steps everyone can take to go green!

Miss Representation Film Showing and Group Discussion - 3/14/13

Faculty, staff, and students came together to promote Women’s History Month by viewing and discussing the eye-opening documentary Miss Representation, an Official Selection of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, which exposes the dramatic toll the media’s portrayal of women and girls is taking and what we can do to try to make a change.

2nd Annual Black History Month Symposium - 2/28/13

This event featured faculty presentations and student performances about black history from a global perspective. Be sure to check back for more information about the 3rd Annual Black History Month Symposium which will be held in February of 2014 in the 3C Building Schoening Conference Center.

One Book Yuma Presents Garth Stein - 2/28/13

The New York Times bestselling author Garth Stein visited campus to discuss his novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain. This event was hosted as a partnership between Arizona Western College, NAU-Yuma, One Book Yuma, and the Yuma Public Library District. The New Juarez with Charlie Minn - 1/23/13

Documentary filmmaker Charlie Minn came to campus to present the third and final film of his trilogy, The New Juarez, which provides an in-depth look at the extreme violence in Juarez, Mexico. Minn discussed the drug cartel wars, murder rates, and political aspects of this extreme issue and addressed life on the border overall.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Walk - 1/17/13

Faculty, staff, and students gathered together to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. The participants walked across campus while playing Martin Luther King, Jr.’s infamous “I Have a Dream” speech aloud to celebrate the historic event.
