GUIDED PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS (GPS)
First-Year Experience Program
Are you a first-year student, new to AWC?
Are you concerned about your first year of college?
Don't worry, the SSS - KEYS Program has what you need!
Our Guided Pathways to Success (GPS) program is a structured learning community which will allow first-year students to get used to the college environment at a smoother pace. The services provided to our first-year students will target areas in which new college students are known to have difficulty as they transition to college.
Each fall semester, approximately 24 first-year students are selected for our GPS program. Our GPS students are first-year students who have applied to AWC, taken the placement tests, and have placed into MAT 121 and/or ENG 100 with an overall reading score of 65 or higher. GPS students will also learn as a group by taking the same courses together to establish a strong support system. For the Math and English courses, GPS students also attend weekly Study Sessions that are required as part of their coursework. Our Academic Skills Coaches facilitate these weekly sessions to reinforce and review what students are learning in their lectures. These sessions are required and past participants have found them to be extremely helpful.
Developmental courses will be taught by AWC faculty who are familiar with the needs and academic barriers of first-year students. The faculty work closely with the SSS - KEYS Program staff to help ensure that students successfully complete their developmental courses in their first semester of college.
In order to participate in our FYCE program, you must meet our SSS - KEYS Program eligibility guidelines.
