YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors women’s soccer team trounced the Glendale Gauchos on Labor Day, with a 6-0 victory at the AWC Soccer Field.
With the victory, the Matadors improve to 3-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Glendale falls to 0-3-0 overall and 0-3-0 in ACCAC play.
In the first half, the Lady Matadors wasted no time as they got in the scoring column in the 17th minute on a goal by Monserrat Rodriguez; the assist went to Greta Espinoza.
After a nice 1-0 cushion, AWC added to their lead on a Greta Espinoza goal, in which Rebecca Wendt assisted to make the score 2-0 in the 30th minute.
In the second half, the Lady Matadors struck for four goals in a six minute stretch. Savannah Sibold scored one of the goals, Greta Espinoza scored her second goal of the night and Sheridan Smith (Yuma, AZ) scored two of the four second half goals.
Reigning ACCAC Goalkeeper of the week Breanna Silveira pitched her second shutout of her young career, stopping all ten Glendale shots.
“We played well tactically tonight and that was key for the win,” said AWC head coach Kenny Dale. “The other key was Rebecca Wendt. Her two assists to set-up Greta Espinoza and Savannah Sibold, really helped put us over the top.”
Up next for the Lady Matadors is a non-conference game against Imperial Valley this Wednesday at 7pm at the Arizona Western College Soccer Field. The men will precede the women at 4:30pm.
