YUMA, AZ – The Arizona Western College Lady Matadors women’s soccer team stormed past the Pima Aztecs in the second half, on their way to a 3-0 season opening victory.
With the victory, the Matadors improve to 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in ACCAC play. With the loss, Pima falls to 0-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in ACCAC play.
Both teams used the first half to feel out one another and to get their legs in game shape.
In the second half, the Lady Matadors offense came alive with three goals. The first of which, came in the 80th minute when Pima drew a yellow card. Elisa Espino was awarded a penalty kick and buried it home to give the Lady Mats an early 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Savannah Sibold struck from the side for her first goal of the season on a pretty pass from Rebecca Wendt. Sibold decided one wasn’t good enough; as the freshman got on the board with her second goal of the match in the 89th minute to give the Lady Matadors a 3-0 victory.
Up next for the Lady Matadors is a quick two-game roadtrip, beginning this coming Thursday in Mesa. The Matador women will battle the Thunderbirds beginning at 8pm. Stay tuned to the Matador Athletics Facebook page for updates throughout the match.
