Matadors Blanked By Pima

YUMA, AZ Ė The Arizona Western College Matadors menís soccer team were shutout in their home opener against the Pima Community College Aztecs 3-0 Friday evening in Yuma.
With the loss, the Matadors fall to 0-1-0 overall and 0-1-0 in ACCAC play. With the victory, Pima improves to 1-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in ACCAC play.
After a scoreless game for most of the first half, Pima took the lead in the 33rd minute, with a goal from Arturo Vega.
In the second half, Pima defender Santiago Carrillo scored a goal in the 62nd minute via a penalty kick; after a foul was called on AWC.
The third and final goal of the game arrived when Ryan Boistow scored on a header in the 87th minute, after AWC goalkeeper Marko Jovanovic came out to attempt a catch.
Jovanovic ended the match with 12 total saves out of 15 Pima shots and earned the AWC man of the match.
In the second half, AWC defender Henry Ramirez was given a red card and ejected from the game.
Pima ended the game with 15 shots on goal. Goalkeeper Sam Kavathas had 7 total saves.
Up next for the Matadors is a quick two-game roadtrip, beginning this coming Thursday in Mesa. The Matadors will battle the Thunderbirds beginning at 5:30pm. Stay tuned to the Matador Athletics Facebook page for live updates throughout the match.
