YUMA, AZ – Current Arizona Western College Lady Matador sophomore midfielder Greta Espinoza (Tijuana, B.C. Mexico) has been chosen to play for her nation’s team. Espinoza will suit up for the Mexican National Women’s Soccer team this month in the women’s under-20 World Cup in Canada. Games will be held in Edmonton, Moncton, Montreal, and Toronto.
“Greta is certainly a top player in the southwest region,” said AWC head soccer coach Kenny Dale. “I think she has the respect of her teammates, coaches and opponents as well as the staff coaches of the Mexican youth national teams program. What an honor for her, and for us!”
Espinoza was one of the leaders for the Lady Matadors during their inaugural season in 2013. The midfielder appeared in 17 games last year while starting in 15 of them for AWC. She scored 10 goals, which was tied for second best on the team to go along with nine assists. Espinoza tallied 29 points for the Lady Mats in 2013 and was a perfect 1-for-1 in penalty kicks, while also scoring two game-winning goals in her freshman campaign.
“This kind of puts Greta and AWC in the spotlight,” said AWC assistant women’s soccer coach Sarah Ramirez. “Greta will obviously miss the start of our preseason camp, but this is definitely a trade-off we are willing to take.”
The schedule for the Mexican National Team is as follows, this Wednesday August 6th, the team will take on Nigeria at 4pm, followed by a game against England on August 9th at 10am, and then group play will conclude on August 13th at 5pm against Korea Republic.
AWC will kick-off their 2014 campaign on August 16th in San Diego at San Diego Christian College; with the scrimmage set for 2pm. The Lady Matadors will kick-off their regular season on August 22nd at home to Pima with the match scheduled to begin at 7pm.
