YUMA, AZ – Former guard Anthony Alston of the Matador Men’s Basketball team announced this weekend, that he has signed his letter of intent to play basketball this upcoming season at Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas.
“We are so happy for Anthony,” said AWC head coach Charles Harral. “He chose Texas A&M International University because of their commitment to success as an academic institution and a basketball program. He wanted to attend a college where he could continue to win basketball games and play at a high level, and at Texas A&M International he will have that.”
Alston finished his sophomore campaign at AWC by averaging 13.4 point per game with close to five assists and four rebounds per game for the season. He appeared in all 32 games for the Matadors and started 29 of those games.
Following the season, Alston was named to the 1st Team All-ACCAC and the 1st Team All-ACCAC Division 1 Team. He was also named as an Honorable Mention on the All-American Team.
“Anthony’s work ethic and loyalty to our program over the past few seasons has been second to none,” said head coach Charles Harral. Me, my coaching staff, and the entire athletic department at Arizona Western College wish him the very best!”
The Texas A&M International Dustdevils are a Division II school that competes in the Heartland Conference. Currently, two former Matadors also compete in the conference that saw the Dustdevils finish 22-9 last season. Those former Matadors are Marvin Whitt at St. Mary’s in San Antonio, Texas and Carlos Perez at Rogers State in Claremore, Oklahoma.
Texas A&M International won the postseason Heartland Conference Championship game, but then fell in the South Central Regional to end their season against 3rd ranked Tarleton State University.
