YUMA, AZ – Arizona Western College is proud to announce that grades are in and the athletic department as a whole finished the 2013-2014 academic school year with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.027.
“We are extremely proud of our student-athletes for doing well in both the classroom and on the court,” said AWC Athletics Director Jerry Smith. “Our primary goal at Arizona Western College is to have our student-athletes graduate and move onto four-year institutions, and with grades like this; our goal will become a reality!”
Fall semester at AWC, saw all eight teams finish with a cumulative GPA of 2.958; with Volleyball leading the way with a GPA at 3.676.
Volleyball led the way once again during this past spring semester with a team best 3.531 GPA, to bring their cumulative GPA for 2013-2014 to 3.615.
“I am once again very proud of the standards this team has accepted and risen towards,” said AWC Head Volleyball Coach Jason Smith. “These girls are truly setting up bright futures for themselves and for our AWC Volleyball Family and the AWC Athletics Department. It is a pleasure to coach such a talented group!”
Looking deeper into the numbers, the four women’s teams at AWC: volleyball, basketball, soccer, and softball finished the 2013-2014 school year with a cumulative GPA of 3.201. The four men’s teams at AWC: soccer, football, basketball, and baseball finished with a cumulative GPA of 2.854.
Altogether, 33 student-athletes were named to the Spring Dean’s List at Arizona Western College.
The 2013-2014 athletic season came to a close a few weeks back, with seven of the eight Matador teams having tasted postseason play. Both the Lady Matador Volleyball team and the Lady Matador Softball team clinched berths into the NJCAA National Tournament. The 2014-2015 season will kick-off in August, stay tuned to Matador Athletics for constant updates on all eight teams all summer long.
