YUMA, AZ – The postseason accolades continue to come in for the Arizona Western College Lady Matador softball team, as they placed five of their players on the 2014 National Fastpitch Coaches Association NJCAA Region 1 All-Region Team for the West Region.
“This is another phenomenal award for our players and our team as a whole,” said AWC Head Coach Nikki Bethurum. “To be named to the NFCA All-Region Team says a lot about each player because the pool of players to choose from is much larger than the awards straight from the NJCAA. We are very grateful and excited to hear how our players faired on these teams.”
The Lady Matadors representatives on the West Region’s First Team were pitcher Ashlee Rex, catcher April Marquez and infielders Robyn Alvara and Bethany Olea.
On the West Region’s Second Team, infielder Summer Ehrig was the lone representative from the Lady Matadors.
“Even though our season is over, it’s good to see our players still being recognized at the national level,” said AWC Athletics Director Jerry Smith. “These players fought so hard all year long and put together a season that will go down in the record books as one of the best ever here at AWC. It’s always very exciting for our players, coaches and athletic personal to see these talented young student-athletes get the recognition they deserve from those outside of the region.”
The Lady Matadors saw their season come to a close two weeks back in the NJCAA National Softball Tournament with a pair of losses to Central Florida and Southern Union State. AWC ended their season ranked second in the nation with an overall record of 49-9.
