YUMA, AZ – For the first time this season, freshman pitcher Tanner McAninch (Las Vegas, NV) from the Matador baseball team has won the ACCAC Division-One Pitcher of the Week award.
“Tanner did a great job for us in a must-win game at Cochise,” said AWC head coach Drew Keehn. “He was able to go out there and throw seven strong innings to lead us to the victory; not much more you can ask for. We have our work cut out for us this week, but this team knows what we need to do so that we can accomplish our goal and make it to the playoffs.”
McAninch tossed seven innings of one-hit baseball last week in a victory against Cochise College. He struck out five batters and didn’t allow a run to score. On the season, McAninch sports a 5-3 record in 12 games played. He has tossed 58.2 innings and has allowed 33 runs, 22 of which were earned on 49 hits with 38 strikeouts and 27 walks.
Last week, the Matadors swept the Cochise Apaches on the road and then split with Eastern Arizona this past Saturday. The Matadors currently trail Cochise by one game with four to play, beginning with today’s (Tuesday’s) doubleheader at Pima. The Matadors do hold the tiebreaker against Cochise because of head-to-head victories.
The Matadors have a tough final week of the regular season as they travel to Tucson this afternoon for an ACCAC doubleheader with the Aztecs. The Mats will return home to close out the regular season this Saturday at Kammann Field against the Scottsdale Fighting Artichokes. First pitch is scheduled for 12 Noon for Sophomore Day at the ballpark and as always, admission is FREE!
