YUMA, AZ – The Lady Matadors softball team continued their winning ways this past week against Scottsdale Community College and climbed a spot to number two in the latest NJCAA Top 20 National Poll; which was released on Wednesday morning.
Arizona Western College currently sits at 34-4 overall and 28-2 in ACCAC play and remains in first place after their sweep of Mesa Community College yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon in Mesa.
Last week, AWC traveled to Scottsdale and defeated the Lady Fighting Artichokes by a final of 16-3 in game one. Game two was a nail biter, but the Lady Mats made a comeback and scored late to defeat Scottsdale 6-4 for the series sweep.
“It’s nice to continue to get the recognition week after week with all of the hard work we have put in so far,” said head coach Nikki Bethurum. “We need to continue to work hard in practice to get better as we go through this second round of conference play.”
Eastern Arizona remained at #8 for the second straight week with an overall record of 31-6. Eastern and Arizona Western are the only ACCAC representatives in the NJCAA Top 20 National Poll.
The Lady Matadors will look to continue their winning ways, when they return to action Saturday on the road at Glendale Community College. The Lady Mats will return to Yuma on Saturday April 19th to host Phoenix College at 12 noon. We invite you to join us starting at 11am as we honor the late AWC head coaching great Charlie Dine by renaming the softball field in his name. Charlie Dine’s family will also receive rings and a plaque in honor of Coach Dine being elected to the NJCAA Softball Hall of Fame earlier this year.
