Matadors Upset Phoenix College In Twin Bill

YUMA, AZ Ė The Arizona Western College Matador baseball team upset the 20th ranked Phoenix College Bears on Tuesday afternoon at Kammann Field by finals of 10-4 and 6-0.
With the victories, AWC improves to 24-13 overall and 9-11 in ACCAC play. With the losses, the 20th rank Phoenix Bears fall to 20-17 overall and 7-13 in ACCAC action.

In game one, the Matadors bats came out early and often, as they scored at least one run in the first four innings. The Mats struck for two runs in the first inning, one in the second, six in the third and a single run in the fourth on their way to a 10-4 win in game one.
Travis Garcia-Perreira (4-2) went the distance for AWC in the first game and allowed just four hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts. Irving Lopez led the offensive charge for the Mats, going a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIís.
In game two, it was a pitcherís duel until the fifth inning, when the Matador bats awoke for a pair of runs. The scoring damage didnít stop there, as AWC would tack on another run in the sixth inning, two in the seventh and one final run in the eighth for a 6-0 shutout victory over Phoenix.
Catcher Beau Cebulski went 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two singles and an RBI. Combined in the two games, Cebulski was 6-for-7 at the plate.
Matt Higgins (1-1) earned his first victory of the season as he tossed five innings of shutout ball. Jose Rosales-Rodarte closed the game out for his second save; going four innings while allowing just two hits with two strikeouts.
The Matadors will hit the road for three games, beginning this Saturday at Paradise Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon on Saturday afternoon. AWC will return home to Kammann Field on Tuesday April 8th when they host Yavapai College at 12 noon.
