YUMA, AZ – The Lady Matadors softball team has been rewarded by the NJCAA for their great start to the season, as the team moved up 15 spots from #20 to #5 in the most recent Top 20 National Poll released by the NJCAA on Wednesday afternoon.
Arizona Western currently sits at 24-4 overall and 18-2 in ACCAC play and remains in first place after their split with Eastern Arizona College on Tuesday.
“We have really been playing well since that opening weekend in Henderson, Nevada,” said AWC head coach Nikki Bethurum. “This group really plays wells together and knows what needs to be done to win games.”
The Lady Matadors return to action on Thursday afternoon when they face another team near the top of the ACCAC conference standings in the Central Arizona Vaqueras, before hitting the road for six straight games.
“Last week was a big week for us!” said head coach Nikki Bethurum. “Defeating Pima twice, Odessa College, and Midland College; who are all good D1 teams was big for us. I think that helped us move up in the polls this week; however that puts us in the position to be the team to beat for future games; so we are going to have to work harder to hold our spot.”
Eastern Arizona is the only other team from the ACCAC that cracked the NJCAA Top 20 National Poll coming in at #13, after falling from the fifth spot a week ago.
The Lady Matadors will look to build off of their epic 3-2 walk-off win against Eastern Arizona on Tuesday when they take on Central Arizona on Thursday. The Vaqueras currently sit in second place in the ACCAC standings with a record of 23-5 overall, while boasting a 15-3 conference record. First pitch is set for 12 noon at the AWC Softball Field and as always, admission is FREE!
