YUMA, AZ – For the first time this season, the Arizona Western College Lady Matadors softball team has made it into the Top 20 National Poll as released by the NJCAA on Wednesday afternoon.
Arizona Western currently sits at 19-3 overall and 17-1 in ACCAC play after a sweep of Pima on Tuesday afternoon.
“It’s a very deserving honor for this group,” said head coach Nikki Bethurum. “It’s nice to see their hard work paying off so early in the season. The season is still young and we have a lot to prove, but this is a good starting point for us.”
The Lady Matadors lone conference loss came back on March 4th when they earned a tough road split in Phoenix against the Lady Bears.
AWC will finish off this week of play with four games in the Central Arizona College Tournament on Friday and Saturday. On day one, the Lady Mats will square off against Odessa (TX) Community College and Midland (TX) Community College. Then on Saturday, AWC will face Embry Riddle University and Illinois Central College.
Other ACCAC teams in the poll include Eastern Arizona College ranked 5th and Central Arizona College is currently receiving votes but has not yet cracked the Top 20.
The Matadors return to home to the AWC Softball Field this coming Tuesday to host Eastern Arizona College in a doubleheader that matches two of the top teams in the ACCAC. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon and as always, admission is FREE! If you can’t make it to the games, you can tune into the game live on 560 KBLU-AM with our pre-game coverage beginning at 11:50am.
